Consigning him to the imaginative netherworld.

The whole story would have been tarnished by the silly triviality of the name.

No one would take the story seriously with a lead character called Bingo.

It just goes to show the Tolkien started out writing a children's story sequel to The Hobbit but ended up writing an extension of the Silmarillion.

And thank the Lord (of the Rings) that he did!

Yeah, I was reading 'the end of the third age' and CT says something about Bingo, I'm like 'what the heck', then it had in brackets 'Frodo'. It was, of course, an unfinished version.

Think about this:

If he never changed them, you'd never think about it would you?

Oh yes I would.

Bingo Trotter!

I couldn't have taken it seriously.

It belittles the grandeur.

It would have been a juvenile tale, as good as the Hobbit but nothing like the majesty of LotR, just by choice of name.

Merry and Pippin are childish names but they work because you know they're nicknames.

It would have been like calling Gandalf, Stargazer or some such schoolboy idea of Fantasy.

A Fantasy rather than a Mythology.

It is amazing how many drafts, corrections etc. Tolkien went through when writing LoTR. I for one am thankful that he dropped some things when writing LoTR, such as some ridiculous names and ideas.

You must remember (of course) that a lot of the Hobbit's names aren't their 'real' names per se.

On the other hand, think of the musical possibilities:

There was a Hobbit who had a Ring,
Bingo was his name-o,
B-I-N-G-O,
B-I-N-G-O,
B-I-N-G-O,
And Bingo was his name-o!

:D

lol! i can just imagine the little hobbits singing that! haha :D

I agree, when I first started to read Return of the Shadow, I did think Bingo was a wierd name. Bilbo sounds better and is a little more realistic.

I think it was Frodo that was originally named Bingo, not Bilbo  .

Obviously LOTR was meant to be more light hearted till it became the darker masterpiece it is .
