The Tolkien Joke and Meme thread

Was this MEME inspirated by this Dominic Noble video?
I'm fairly certain that it's to be found in JRRT's writings. I didn't find it in the FotR chapter "Council of Elrond", nor in the "Unfinished Tales" section "The Hunt for the Ring". Ah, found it in the FotR chapter "The Shadow of the Past". After Gollum had left the Misty Mountains, and followed Bilbo's trail as far as Esgaroth and Dale, he returned from there, going through Mirkwood east to west: "The Woodmen said that there was some new terror abroad, a ghost that drank blood. It climbed trees to find nests; it crept into holes to find the young; it slipped through windows to find cradles."

No, I just mentioned it because the guy who made the video also for some reason does not seem certain that Gollum eat babies despite the description in the book making it quite clear.

That this "meme" (© Richard Dawkins 1976) may have lost its roots in JRRT's writing, especially in Internet posts, would not surprise me in the least. An outside chance might have been after Gollum's escape from the Elves that Legolas reported at the Council of Elrond. But the time after he lost the One Ring to Bilbo in 2941 TA and his capture on the borders of (in?) Mordor somewhere between 3009 and 3017 (when he was released from Mordor) is just so massively longer, 68 years at least, that it seemed much more likely. That Gandalf was the one who gained this information by interrogating Gollum in Thranduil's realm was clear - just not where he revealed his information to others.
