I really like this, as I've never see LotR in that style before.

Off the beaten path, I'll say that for it. 😊

Off topic, but it made me remember another example of a nontraditional take on a well-known subject -- Alicia Austin's Mesoamerican-influenced illustrations for the 1975 Donald Grant edition of the Conan story "A Witch Shall Be Born".

Check out Kaprriss:

I especially love her portrayals of Melkor. I like when he looks more human like than scary tall god in armor. That face really help you to catch a glimpse of his personality. Iron helmet make him more distant.

Her Mairon have really devilish eyes.

This Melkor from Andrey Kandrushin also looks nice.

Another great artist is Alystraea:

I came across this picture of Sauron with werewolfs today.

My favorite picture of Gondolin.

Glorfindel from saMo-art.

My brother made this to adorn the back of my laptop. Needless to say I am very happy, ha ha.

Thanks,

I just love this take on LotR by artist Leia Ham, who asks 'what if LOTR, but ancient China?'

I'd like to see a Chinese LOTR!

[Olorgando]

I'd like to see a Chinese LOTR!

That would involve some major geographical reorientation, if "naturalized", is my guess.
I mean Europeans and Chinese probably agree that Genghis Khan and his bunch were barbarian nomads - but from the Chinese perspective they were "Westerlings!" 🥴

[HALETH✒🗡]

I don't know who is the artist but he must be really talented.

[ZehnWaters]

There's tons of artwork out there but I figured maybe we could use this thread to share some of our favorites that we've come across by other artists. If you post any, try to give credit to the original artist in your post. I'll start, I found this on Reddit this morning of Turin vs Glaurung.

Samo is great. Their Tar-Ancalime looks just like my best friend's wife.

I'd watch an entire movie in this style.

I was dumbstruck to learn, that there's a 1970's version of LOTR which is illustrated by a "Ingahild Grathmer". This is in fact a pseudonym used by th Danish Queen Margereth II. The hard-to-impress author absolutely loved them, and was taken with how similar they were to his own sketches. Grathmer’s art ultimately appeared in a 1977 Danish edition of Lord of the Rings.

[Squint-eyed Southerner]

I believe that one is from The Hobbit. Her illustrations were also used in the Folio Society edition.

Thank you for pointing that out, found one form LOTR

Nazgul illustration by Ingahild Grathmer (Queen Margrethe II of Denmark) for a 1971 edition of 'The Lord of the Rings' by J.R.R. Tolkein

Yes, apparently her illustrations were used in the Folio Society's LOTR edition, though I don't have that, just The Hobbit, unfortunately.

Here are a couple of pics of that edition:

(I realize we're having some overlap with the Book Covers thread. 😁 )

Interesting take on Balrogs by Morgan Rogers.
