The Royal Family Of Gondor
by SaMo art

The Haven of Morionde by Roger Garland

This image from near the end of "Tolkien's World--Paintings of Middle-earth" (1992) always captures my imagination. I've not read The Lost Road. So, all I have is this illustration and a little bit of text included on the facing page.

Suddenly the sea became unquiet; it rose until it became like a mountain, and it rolled in upon the land...Upon that ship which was cast highest and stood dry upon a hill there was a man, or one in man's shape, but greater than any even of the race of Numenor in stature.

He stood upon the rock and said: "This is done as a sign of power. For I am Sauron the mighty, servant of the Strong...I have come..."

Fascinating.... very accurately drawn in the style of the older ikons (mid 20th C and earlier) of the Eastern Christian churches.
By way of comparison below is a picture of a real Ikon of St Michael the Archangel (slaying the Devil)

No, no! Tom Bombadil is Michael -- someone published an eight-part essay proving it!
