Tolkien Moments

Like him or hate him, we owe a debt of gratitude to PJ** for bringing Tolkien to the larger world.
The earlier films/ radio dramatizations did not do this.

I am reluctant to give him too much credit for this (I mean, I don't like the guy 🙄😒).
The world having been already "electronically connected" did play a big part also.

Last month, The Battle of Sudden Flame came to our rural property/house in Missouri (central U.S.). Very high winds knocked over a tree onto power lines just upwind from our 40 acres of forest and started a fire. I was away at the time, but luckily my friends and co-owners were there to protect the house (lots of raking leaves to create fire breaks ahead of the progressing burn line.) I arrived on the scene about 11 pm and had to walk past the emergency vehicles and the firefighters to get into the property to assist in the battle (high winds, trees burning overhead, embers and ash falling through the air, etc.). The danger to the house was mostly over by then. The fire had burnt past the house but was still progressing slowly upwind to come back around toward the house. We finally felt the battle was won by 2 a.m. and called it a night.

Sorry, no action photos. We were a little busy to take pictures during the heat (literally) of battle. Here’s one from the next morning…a tree burned through and fell across the driveway a couple hundred yards uphill from the house:

Considering what could have happened (could easily have lost a house if no one was there) I'd say we made out pretty good. In the end, there were no significant losses...a few hundred feet of plastic pipe and garden hoses burnt/melted. It's sad to see some of the pine trees we planted 20+ years ago got burnt up. However, I expect the forest will be just fine after things start growing this spring.
