What are you watching?

Started Tulsa King yesterday and gotta say at 76 Stallone is still a G.
Also rewatched Role Models last weekend, wasn't as great as I remembered but man is it a joy watching Stifler and Mclovin 🤣

Watching Home Before Dark on Apple TV+. It's not bad, not great so far. About some 9 year old who's trying to crack a cold case in her town, based off a true story apparently.

I've been watching what may be David Attenborough's last wildlife series, Wild Isles, about wildlife in the British Isles. There was one particularly remarkable sequence of a Starling roost being attacked by a Barn Owl filmed at night with infra red. It comes at about 6:50 in Wild Isles. There is a longer sequence in the actual programme.

Wow this looks so good Erestor Arcamen. I often wonder if these kind of films were shown on prime time main channel TV rather than the some of the modern pap that is served up how would they be received - b/w, no special effects just good acting and story. Maybe we've moved beyond those qualities now.

Funnily enough I came across another Edward G Robinson film last night: Tight Spot. Based on a play which was based on a real event, it features Ginger Rogers as a potential witness against a gangster played by Lorne Greene - him of Bonanza and Battlestar Galactica and Brian Keith as the chief of the police guard for Rogers. The film starts with the shooting of another potential witness on the steps of New York Supreme Court - the same place Barzini is shot by that miracle long shot by Al Neri in The Godfather. The murdered witness even rolls down the steps like Barzini!

Lorne Greene is brilliant as the cold and cold hearted gangster - maybe he was wasted on his future patriarchal roles! Robinson is not the star here, which are Rogers and Keith but, of course, he dominates the screen when he appears. But not having classic film star looks how many starring roles would Robinson have these days? And Rogers manages to sneak in a smoochy dance with Keith! A superior B movie with a really interesting cast. They don't make 'em like that any more. The whole film is free on Youtube.

Tight Spot

It was a really good movie. Not to thriller-ish but a good story still. I'll have to check out Tight Spot, it looks interesting. I really like Edward G Robinson as an actor. I love these older movies. Even if they're not all super good, I love to watch these old movies from the golden age and around that time.

Last night Ent watched Spiders and Spiders 2, 'background' stuff while doing other things. Bad stuff, weak special effects - but just Ent's kind of stuff..!
Actually displayed strong female components instead of the weak, fall down, scream, oh help me I'm helpless style. That was nice. Also of course Spiders 2 casts Richard Moll, and for some reason Ent has always liked the way he delivers his roles.

Been watching Rogue Heroes the last couple weeks. The first two episodes are a dramatized telling of the formation of the UK's SAS unit in North Africa in 1941.

Another series I am watching that I had bypassed when it aired is The Americans. There is six seasons and so far have watched through two. I do like these spy-noir shows! I do want to re-watch Berlin Station but there seems to be only the first season on DVD and I cant find it streaming anywhere.

Took a break from that series and watched the seven episodes of Florida Man. Some good actors having a good time in this comedic modern day search for treasure.

Finally managed to get through the backlog a bit recently.
Gave Shadow and Bone another try, watched both seasons.
It's got nice ideas but it could be fleshed out more.
I don't think it profited from mixing some of the storylines because it didn't leave enough for the main cast. Also a bit too YA for my taste.
But nice effort nonetheless.

Also finished The Mandalorian, bit of a letdown. Pretty sure it had the same all around buildup as the previous seasons but somehow fell flat, maybe because it had to follow up after Andor.

Mayor of Kingstown was pretty cool.
And Perry Mason was excellent, about the only show on this list that didn't fail the season 2 expectations.

I'm currently watching The Alienist's 2nd season, quite a letdown.
The character dynamics are nice, about the same as season one really but the mystique and blurry line between the supernatural and grounded events which were front and center in the first season sadly were exempt from the 2nd season.

Just finished 'The Diplomat' on Netflix.

It's described as a Drama; Political thriller, so I was expecting something harder hitting. It's more of a light drama with a bit of comedy. Not a bad watch though, just feels a bit soapy.

Watched half of Lawrence of Arabia last night, (its 3 hours and 47 minutes, so couldn't do it all in one go) it's really well done, I'm looking forward to finishing it.
