What are you watching?

I’d love to watch the Super Mario Brothers movie since it’s available to rent now but can’t justify spending $25 to rent it when it would have been cheaper to see in a theater 🤯…oh well 🏴‍☠️

not too bad. the only other one close to a hope was, in Ent's opinion, "A Few Good Men". Hopes were dashed shortly thereafter, however.
Which ones haven't you watched yet?
I've watched most so am fairly certain I can give you an informed opinion if you wish to be surprised.

oooh.... Ent will need to pull a list of all his flicks.... starting at Taps, All The Right Moves, Risky Business and Legend. (There are 2 in the early time period there Ent missed.)

Will be back to you with a comprehensive list... OR... you can just advise 2 or 3 (or 15 or whatever) you feel he actually did a credible job in, and Ent will review any he hasn't watched.

The Top Guns (yes, Ent even watched this latest one) and anything Mission Impossible can be ignored in your thinking... Ent already directed him to the "Skills Locker" based on those without success. (Ent admits he refused to watch some of the Mission Impossible fare.)

Nothing Jack Reacher has Reached Ent's eyes either... only because of pre-disposed OPINION - a rare case of Ent giving credence to his own self-generated viewpoint.

(PLEASE don't offer up War of the Worlds, or The Mummy... Ent knows they are #1 and #6 on his largest grossing movies list... but that speaks more to the public's willingness to part with money for unnecessary stuff, than his skills.

Oh also... no need to mention 'rain man'... that one was another giving Ent an instant of hope for the future dashed on the rocks at the base of a rather high cliff.)

Ent.

@CheriptheRipper - also please understand... Ent isn't in the least saying the movies in which Mr. Cruise has participated are bad movies, etc. Some of them are quite entertaining. The issue isn't at all with the writers, producers, other actors, scene settings, makeup, events, etc. (Except in a few cases where plausibility is out the window.)

The issue is Mr. Cruise. Both in the films, and outside of them. He's a bit of an Orc.

@Ent
I don't want to throw too many on you because it will be a big time investment.
And I'm not saying you're not open to the idea of liking them as apparently you have already tried many a time but it seems you're more probable to dislike them, and I wouldn't want to waste your time Ent.
Based on the info you've just provided I want to recommend 'The Firm', 'Interview with the Vampire' and 'Collateral'.
In my opinion all three happen to be good movies but they're just somewhat different from his other film roles, IwtV quite a bit more, and Collateral you might be prone to dislike as you did Mission Impossible (and Jack Reacher is mostly the same btw albeit a wittier character) but it's still worth a looksie if only the trailer, besides who doesn't like a bit of Michael Mann goodness.
I don't quite know what it is you're looking for, as in what constitutes a 'good performance' but as it stands, these, I think, have the best chance of meeting that criteria.

No way 😮

I do believe you've mentioned that before and can totally see where you're coming from.
If I try and be objective I think it's easy to divide his career into the romantic/playboy movies he did earlier in his career and the action based movies he's come to do later on for the most part.
It is easy for me to enjoy his movies but if we're talking academy award winning (which really is a fake award but what other pedestal can I compare it to?) acting, he's never really come close (imo).
I can only hope that either one of the three mentioned above manage to change your opinion, and if not I hope you enjoy the movies.

@CheriptheRipper - Ent will always enjoy a movie for what it is, rather than for the pieces within it.
Sometimes it's like a smushed jigsaw puzzle, and the pieces just don't quite fit. The picture, when it's all put together, is generally still pretty good. But those pieces...!!
your 3 suggestions are noted. will give them a go. (tried part of The Firm but don't have a recall of why ent was pulled away from it... )

Just watched The Eagle, its a really good movie if you like Romans and Celts, and don't mind blood.

I watched part of it. Seemed to be diverging too far from the book. Maybe I'll get back to it.

Recently started rewatching The Simpsons from the start (into season 3). Also started watching Deadwood.

Watched half of National Velvet last night, then internet switched off, so we'll finish it tonight. Its a bit slow and a bit old (filmed in 1944), but its okay. Not as exciting as The Eagle.
