What are you watching?

Hats off to those watching the old 1950s 'horror' movies.
- Them! - release 6/16/1954 has been mentioned.
- Attack Of the Crab Monsters - release 2/14/1957 is worth the watch.
- Brain From the Planet Arous - release 10/1/1957 is also not to be missed.
- War Of the Worlds, first released in Los Angeles in Feb. 1953, then widely in August 1953 a classic.
- Creature From the Black Lagoon - released February 1954.
- The Werewolf classic, released July 1956.
- Of course, Frankenstein and The Mummy were 1931 and 1932 releases respectively, but still 'not to be missed.'
- and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane was just beyond them, in October 1962, but is of the 'good old style.'

- TV shows such as Alfred Hitchcock and The Twilight Zone also had their openings in the 50s.
- I Love Lucy, Ozzie and Harriett, The Honeymooners, Leave It to Beaver, Father Knows Best - all were spawned in the 50s, and their spawn derivative thereof.
- Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, The Rifleman - Perry Mason, Dragnet - Ed Sullivan, and The Mickey Mouse Club (and other Disney fare) -

These are great years of great beginnings. In many/most respects, everything following is but a 'sequel.'
(Though these themselves are in many ways but reworkings of earlier writing and thinking. "there is no new thing under the sun.")

Not to be missed, these kinds of gems.

Added note: Of course, Caltiki the Immortal Monster of September, 1960 is also not to be missed. So immortal a monster, it took an outsized flamethrower on tracks to do it in, as I recall. ('ll need to watch this one again myself.)

Am now watching this movie. I strongly recommend it. Very, very good. It is funny but also terrifying. I would say that there are some similar things in it to LOTR. Not the plot, but the creatures; there is a Warg-like creature, and an eagle, who is supposed to help the main character. This is a very good movie.

Well. Ent'll take a peek at Lady.... @Beleg_Cúthalion.

Meanwhile, he's putting Zontar (1967) mentioned earlier, into this weekend's queue - never seen it - and also another he found, The Cosmic Man (1959) with John Carradine, Bruce Bennett, and Angela Greene.

Odd. Ent was more than old enough to see them both - but can't recall them.

The Dark Crystal (1982)

It's the first time I've seen it. I thought the visual and sound design were done well, and I liked it.

I watched it here (for free, with ads):
Captions are available if you prefer watching with them. I think it's also on YouTube.

I recently watched

A Princess Bride. (80s. It was nice. Only watched it bc of Heathers.)

Phantom of the Opera. (Idk what to think about this one)

Wicked. (I finally watched it bc everyone was telling me to but i thought it was kinda woke. BUt there were certain aspects i liked and disliked. I will watch pt 2).

Mean Girls. (Remake sucked, loved the original tho.)

I foolishly* stayed up until (groan 😩) 2 AM watching this episode of the (excellent) show:

_______________________________________________

This one is especially notable as pairing Esposito and Eldard five years after they played police partners in the short-lived comedy series "Bakersfield P.D.". Very different characters here, though.

* Especially foolish, given that I own every season but one on DVD. 🤪

Well, Ent finally watched the newest Jurassic World: Rebirth.
Ent is still struggling to arrive at conclusions. A 2nd watch is in order - but for some reason the thought of it doesn't elicit....excitement.
It will be done more from the confirmation/verification/what-in-the-world-did-Ent-miss-here perspective.
.

I've watched a couple clips of that movie, and it absolutely sucked in my opinion.

Sorry for the odd-looking link. My computer can only share links and not the actual video. This is from one of my favorite TV series, PHSYCH!
One of the funniest TV series I have ever watched. The link leads to a scene from it, which in my opinion is very humerous.

Ah, my dear Master Scamilton, young you are, and new to the TTF Forum.
So Ent is fairly certain you do not know such a comment invites him onto his "platform," as some might say.

From 'a couple of clips' an opinion is formed! This is, indeed, true. But a perspective cannot be.
By studying the shell of an egg, we may be able to with relative certainty, determine wheither it may crack when introduced into boiling water.
But we cannot speak to its flavor, when it is eaten.
No, no - the perspective is built by cooking the egg in a way suitable to its potential, then actually tasting it.
There are many facets to an egg, and not all can be seen from its shell alone.
And there are many ways to cook it, not all producing the same end result.

So it is with anything in life. In this particular example, "a couple clips" cannot possibly speak to the whole, and making a judgment from them MAY preclude us from experiencing many a fine moment within the whole of the film itself, even should the film, by and large, still not be among our 'favorites' in the long run.

Perhaps the clips 'sucked' - somehow not meeting a grid of criteria we have built through which to filter the whole. But does the whole actually 'suck'? Who can say, unless the whole is consumed as it is, for what it is, in the multitude of ways it can be viewed and consumed?

End always advocates we do not judge an egg by its shell. We miss many things thereby.
"We must not be hasty."

There was a summer where I watched this series in its entirety. I rewatched it for a 2nd time. I loved this show back in the day. I just started to sing the theme song, and it has been around 14 years since I have seen the show 😄

Okay, Ent. Look, I get what you’re trying to do here — wise forest guardian, ancient tree spirit, mystical guide of the cinematic omelet. Very atmospheric. Very let me adjust my cloak before I speak.

But like… you wrote me a whole monologue about eggs.

And I promise I actually understood your point — “clips = shell, full movie = actual egg.”
Yes. Got it. Loud and clear. Omelet philosophy 101.

But here’s the thing: sometimes you can look at the egg and already know you don’t want to eat it.
If it’s cracked, smells weird, or someone already used it to make one of those sad cafeteria omelets from middle school lunch? Yeah. I don’t need to fry it to know it’s not my vibe.

And I didn’t say I had some full spiritual “perspective.”
I said I had an opinion.
People are allowed to have those before they finish the entire buffet.

Like, if I hear two songs from an album and they’re both awful, I don’t need to suffer through the rest to confirm I don’t like it. My ears are just… done. The jury has clocked out. We’re going home.

I respect the passion. I really do.
You are clearly ready to deliver the Egg Sermon on the Mount at any moment.

But you could’ve just said:

“Hey, I think the full movie has more context. You might like it better if you watch the whole thing.”

Instead, we took a nature walk through your Culinary Philosophy Forest.

Anyway, I’ll watch if I feel like it.
If I don’t, I won’t.
The fates will survive my choices.
Also, not to be like annoying, but I find many people, including ones who claim they're wise, to know nothing of story telling. I read the first few chapters of a book, and it sucked. So i stopped reading it. Why waste time on 600 pages of a book you don't like? I watched the first episode of Rings of Power. Hated it. Stopped watching it as well. So, I think you shouldn't waste your time moaning on about eggs and an omelet or whatever and spend time focusing on what you shouldn't waste time on.

Nah, but don't worry. I admire someone who takes time to lecture someone about eggs.
