I know it's risky with men and dwarves (it seemed ok with Elves as Frodo came close to mentioning it when they were in the Shire), but, though even Gollum was a Hobbit, I don't think that anyone besides Ted Sandyman and the Sackville Bagginses would be nasty enough to try and abuse its power and steal it from Bilbo or Frodo.
To be blunt, supposing that Frodo told his friends "I've found Suaron's Ring. I need a way out of the Shire and to go destroy it without being noticed.", and he could PROVE that he wasn't full of wine from the Green Dragon, what do you think the result would have been?
On the one hand, Hobbits seem some of the strongest resistant to the power of the Great Rings, even the One Ring. However, Gandalf also says that what happened to Gollum could have happened to many Hobbits that he knew.
What Hobbits do you think it wouldn't have been fatal had they found out about the Ring? Would it have been bad if the Gaffer knew what Frodo had for instance? If he had known, he might have told the Black Rider even LESS than he did in Three Is Company. On the flip side, he might have gone ballistic on learning that his son Sam planned to go to Mordor with Frodo.
Same thing with Farmer Maggot. He seems the type to not easily fall prey to the lure of the Ring. If he'd known, he'd have been scared but I bet he'd still have agreed to help them escape.
