grey heavens?

hi, I'm new to this list so hello averyone/
I just finished reading the lors of the rings and I had a question:

what are the grey heavens and what to they mean to sail to the West? Does it mean the elves, Frodo and Bilbo went to paradise or something?

also I wanted to know what does Thain mean -(Pippin becomes the Thain in the Shire)

I really liked the book, though I was expectiong a totaly diferent ending. But it was good. Cant wait for the next movies.

Welcome Sabrina hope you have fun on here.

To answer your questions? The grey havens is where Cirdan the shipwright lives and makes his ships that the departing Elves use to return to Valinor in the west. Valinor is where the gods/angels reside with the Elves. All the elves of the world should be there, but some never went when they where first invited by the gods in the first age and some who did go later returned to middle earth, Galadriel was one these elves. Valinor is like heaven on earth I suppose, the real 'heaven' where Iluvatar is is where I think men go when they die. Hope this answers your question.

ps Thain is another word for a Lord

thanks

thanks now I see what they mean. I really liked the story , but I get lost in the Middle age history and all the history about the diferent species. But I guess that ia what makes this book so good, it really seems a history book, so detailed as if it really happened.
again thanks for the quik reply
