What was the Speak Friend And Enter Password?

I believe that Gandalf, when frustrated says "Adro! Adro!" or "Edro! Edro!" I belive that is "open! open!" or something! He also says something like:

"Adro edhellen edro hi ammen"

I'm not sure if that's right, and there's also some more but I can't be bothered to get off my lazy behind to get the book and find out!

Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea what the words above mean........the same words as above are used in the movie when they first arrive at Moria-gate...........and Gandalf in the movie also says "Ithlidin' under his breath. That is the stuff made of mithril that reflects only moonlight and starlight. And only then you have to say some words before they will do that, probably in Elvish, though in the book Gandalf does not specfiy what the words are. If they are said elsewhere I am unaware of them!

Yes, Evenstar. The doors were made in Durin's Day, when there was friendship between Elves and Dwarves. There was a particularly strong friendship between The Elves of Hollin (whose Lord was Celebrimbor) and the Dwarves of Moria (whose Lord was Durin).

The Elves of Hollin were great smiths and wrought the Three Elven Rings. Celebrimbor wrought the rings and also the letters on the doors of the West-gate of Moria. Narvi made the doors, he was a Dwarf. Both Celebrimbor and Narvi's kin perished from the Earth.

There was great trade and friendship between these particular Elves and Dwarves, and often Elves would trade in Moria for mithril etc, so the door was always open. But it was shut in the Second Age when Celebrimbor was aware of Sauron and the One Ring. There was war in Hollin and the door was shut.

That's about it!

So yes, there was an agreement between the Elves and Dwarves.
