Black Uruks

History

Making up a substantial fighting strength of Sauron’s colossal army, Black Uruks were a vicious breed of Orcs. They were also called Uruks of Mordor. Originating in the Third Age 2475, Black Uruks were the first Orcs breed of Middle Earth created by Sauron, the Dark Lord. These Uruks had attacked Minas Morgul, Ithilien, and Osgiliath and destroyed a lot of places. Being Sauron’s elite breed of Orcs, Black Uruks were not often seen on the battlefield. They participated in the battles of the War of The Ring carrying powerful weapons. Gandalf had spotted Black Uruks in Moria before the fight between the Fellowship of the Ring and the Orcs of Moria in the Chamber of Mazarbul. A group of Uruks resided at the Tower of Cirith Ungol within Mordor. Sam and Frodo, the Hobbits had seen Uruks marching towards the Black Gate when the movement of Sauron’s army was going on. The Black Uruks were primarily bred in the mountain valley fortress in Mordor and were also bred in the valley of Udun, Minas Morgul, and Barad-Dur. However, these Uruks came out fighting when they were born and started dominating those around them. [1]

Attributes & Weapons

Just like the Orcs of Mordor, these creatures attack less if the opponent is aligned with them. Higher the alignment with Mordor, lower is the chance of getting attacked by Uruks. They spawn themselves whenever the Orcs go into battle and also spawned when Mordor invaded the lands around the dark mountains. They could not ride the Wargs because of their massive size. They, unlike other Orcs, were not weakened by sunlight and were stronger and more versatile. However, the rate of spawn was lower than the regular Orcs of Mordor. Black Uruks use the equipment and weapons like spears, battleaxes, daggers made out of steel. [2]

Adaptations

In ‘The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King’, Peter Jackson shows Black Uruks frequently. One of them was Murgash, and Frodo and Sam also saw others. The main Uruk of Mordor is portrayed as Shargrat at the Tower of Cirith Ungol. All the Uruks of Mordor portrayed in the film were recognizable by their broad structure and long hair.
