An Elf-lady or Elven noblewoman, Celebrian was the daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn. She was known as Lady of Rivendell as she was the wife of Elrond. She was also the mother of Arwen, Elrohir, and Elladan.
History
It is not clear where and when Celebrian was born. But it is believed she was born between 350 and 400 of the Second Age[1] She dwelled in Eregion with her mother and later moved to Lorinand in 1350 of the Second Age. In about 1700, Celebrian and Galadriel passed through Moria and settled in Rivendell where she met Elrond and they fell in love. Celebrian married Elrond in 109 of the Third Age and gave birth to twin sons Elrohir and Elladan in 130 T.A. A daughter, Arwen was born to her in 241 T.A. She had got the Elfstone from Galadriel that she later gave to her daughter, Arwen. She married Aragorn Elessar and later became the lady of the Reunited Kingdom. In 2509 T.A., Celebrian, on her way to Lothlorien to pay a visit to her parents, was waylaid by Orcs near theMisty Mountains. The Orcs captured her in the Redhorn Pass and her escort scattered by the sudden assault. She was carried off and given fatal wounds. Her sons came to rescue her and she was brought back to Imladris. Elrond tried to heal her physically but Celebrian could never heal fully in mind and spirit. She was extremely horrified with the memories of her torture and did not wish to remain longer on Middle Earth. The next year, she left for the Grey Havens and crossed the Great Sea [2]. Elladan and Elrohir could never forgive their mother’s torture and often rode to kill the Orcs and servants of Sauron.
Later References
The Lord of the Rings has multiple mentions of Celebrian like the one of being the daughter of Galadriel and that of her torment. Tolkien states that when the Ruling Ring was destroyed, the Three Rings lost their power. Elrond, at last, got ready to depart from Middle Earth and followed Celebrian. After 500 years, at the Grey Havens, Celebrian and Elrond finally reunited in about 3021 T.A. Elrond was, however, departed forever from his daughter.
Etymology
Celebrian is a Sindarin name that translates to ‘Silver Queen’ from ‘Celeb’ (Silver) and ‘Rian’ (Queen).
Other Versions
In his earlier writings, Tolkien mentions that Amroth was the brother of Celebrian, the son of Celeborn and Galadriel. It was believed that Galadriel had come to Lothlorien with the two children. Later when Galadriel and Celebrian went to Rivendell, Amroth was left back in the forest and he visited his family long after when they dwelled in Dol Amroth. In another version of the legendarium, Celebrian married Elrond in 2500 T.A. and she was slain in 2600 T.A. by the Orcs.
