Crowning of King Elessar

The crowning of King Elessar was an event held in Minas Tirith to pronounce Aragorn II as the King of the Reunited Kingdom of Arnor and Gondor.

Description

The Crowning of King Elessar took place in TA 3019 after the defeat of Sauron. Aragorn, the son of Arathorn II and Gilraen, Dúnadain of the North, was proclaimed King Elessar after the Elfstone he possessed. This event was held on a clear morning in the Pelennor fields before the walls of Minas Tirith. Brave Men with long swords and arms guarded the city. The vast space on the fields was hemmed with tents and campsites for the various people gathered for the ceremony. It involved knights and the soldiers of Gondor, Rohan, and other people of Middle-earth. Aragorn arrived at the ceremony clad in black and wore a long white mantle with a glittering green jewel clasped around his throat. His head was bare. He was accompanied by Éomer of Rohan, Prince Imrahil, and Gandalf, all clad in white robes. [1] The coronation ceremony commenced when a single trumpet was blown. The loud sound was followed by a lull from the spectators. From the gate arrived Faramir, the Steward of the Realm with four men carrying a great casket of black lebethron. Then Faramir rose and declared Aragorn as King Elessar: 'Men of Gondor hear now the Steward of this Realm! Behold! one has come to claim the kingship again at last. Here is Aragorn son of Arathorn, chieftain of the Dúnedain of Arnor, Captain of the Host of the West, bearer of the Star of the North, wielder of the Sword Reforged, victorious in battle, whose hands bring healing, the Elfstone, Elessar of the line of Valandil, Isildur's son, Elendil's son of Númenor. Shall he be King and enter into the city and dwell there?'

The spectators replied yes.

Faramir took the silver crown with seven gems and a jewel on its summit out of the casket and lodged it on the new King's head. However, Aragorn did not accept the crown and said, [2] 'By the labor and valor of many, I have come into my inheritance. In token of this, I would have the Ring-bearer bring the crown to me and let Mithrandir set it upon my head if he will, for he has been the mover of all that has been accomplished, and this is his victory.'

Then Gandalf set the White Crown on Aragorn's head and pronounced him the King. Faramir cried:

'Behold the King!'

The coronation concluded with the music of the harp, viola, trumpet and flute, and vocal songs.
Thus the reign of King Elessar was a period of great harmony and prosperity within the Reunited Kingdom Gondor and Arnor. He ruled for 122 years.
