Imrahil

Imrahil, or Prince Imrahil, was the 22nd Prince of Dol Amroth. He was the youngest of three children of Adrahil II. His sisters were Finduilas and Ivriniel. When his father died in 3010 in the Third Age, he became the Prince. He had four children – Amrothos, Lothiriel, Elphir, and Erchirion. Lothiriel, his daughter, had married the King of Rohan, Eomer, at the end of the Third Age.

History

During the War of The Ring, in the year 3019, Imrahil prepared a force of 700 armed men and a team of Knights of Dol Amroth. He led the troops to Minas Tirith to defend the city. As Southrons troubled Faramir, On 13th March, Imrahil instructed the Knights to form a sortie along with Gandalf to rescue his sister-son from the pursuers. He had also gone to the rescue of his brother-in-law Denethor who went mad. Faramir also got a poisonous wound. As he was the highest authority in Gondor, Imrahil took command and passed it to Gandalf.

Imrahil helped him as Denethor withdrew with his wounded son to the White Tower. Imrahil carried his nephew on the horse to the city. [1] After two days, the Battle of the Pelennor Fields was raged. When Imrahil went out in the city, he saw the funeral procession of Theoden of Rohan. He noticed that Eowyn was still alive and sent help for her healing. As Eomer and his riders were outnumbered, Imrahil went to their aid riding into the battle. Soon Aragorn joined them, and the battle turned. Imrahil pursued the East and drove away from the frightened orcs and Variags.

He had survived the battle and reached the Gate of Minas Tirith along with Aragorn and Eomer. Imrahil had realized that Aragorn was the perfect King but believed that he should not enter the city as he knew Denethor was mighty and stubborn. Upon learning about the death of Denethor and Faramir's condition, he asked for Aragorn to be summoned as he remembered that the kings of old were great at healing. When Gandalf requested, Aragorn came to heal the wounds of Merry, Eowyn, and Faramir but announced that Imrahil would rule the city until Faramir recovered, thus giving Steward the position of Imrahil. When the Captains of the West debated, Gandalf proposed that they should proceed to the Black Gate so that Sauron gets distracted from the Ring Bearer, Frodo. Imrahil said he would follow Aragorn, but he also instructed some people to remain at the city for defense as Minas Tirith was under his rule.

Lastly, a force of 7000 men was appointed to ride forth. He had laughed at this decision. The troops left Minas Tirith and bypassed Minas Morgul. As Sauron's army appeared from the Black Gate, Imrahil faced them with his men. The Battle of the Black Gate was then fought, and in the end, the One Ring got destroyed. The Prince was present during the final ceremony of Theoden and had stayed in Edoras after he was buried. He also attended the celebration of the field of Cormallen and Aragorn's appointment as the King. He became friends with Eomer and his daughter, Lothiriel was married to Eomer. When the War of the Ring ended, Imrahil and the Prince of Ithilien, Faramir, were the principal commanders of Elessar. Imrahil was also the advisor of the King and a member of the Council of Gondor. The Prince died in the year Fo.A. 34, and his eldest son Elphir succeeded him and took over the reign.

Notes

Just like the elves Elrohir and Elladan, Imrahil appears to have been added lately to 'The Lord of the Rings' as Tolkien wanted more people to support Aragorn in the battle. Throughout the time, Imrahil kept emphasizing that Aragorn should be the King of Gondor. He had a quality of utmost loyalty to Aragorn, whom he keeps supporting all the time. [2]

Etymology

Known to have Numenorean origins, the word 'Imrahil' does not have a clear meaning. However, the word 'hil' appearing in Imrahil is associated with 'kil' in Westron and therefore related to Elvish followers. Based on this root, the proposed meaning of Imrahil is 'Heir of Imrazor.'
