Dagorlad was a vast, treeless plain in the northwest of Mordor in Middle-Earth. This open plain was located right below the Black Gate of the Morannon and between Emyn Muil and the Cirith Gorgor. For the most part, the land was a treeless wasteland, missing any life or beauty.

Etymology

In the Sindarin language, the word Dagorlad translates to “battle plain”.

History

The site was witness to several iconic battles fought in Gondor’s history. Out of which the most significant were the fall of Sauron’s forces in the Battle of Dagorlad, the Battle of Morannon, and King Calimehtar’s win against the Easterlings. At the end of the Second Age, Sauron’s forces went on a war against the Last Alliance of the Elves and Men. The armies of the Last Alliance were headed by Gil-Galad and Elendil while a group of Orcs and Sauron’s loyal men was on the other end. There were many casualties on both sides. Many were killed by the forces of the Elves, Men, and the Orcs. [1] After the war ended, the dead bodies decayed like normal. However as time passed by, a particular part of the land known as Dead Marshes turned it into a wetland swallowing up the dead even though their bodies could still be seen floating in the water. [2] Following that, the Battle of The Black Gate along with several other wars were fought there between Gondor and Easterlings. It was the final major battle that was fought against Sauron. The West army led by Aragorn was 6,000 people strong.

They marched towards the gate in order to create a diversion. They wanted to distract Sauron’s attention so that Sam and Frodo could carry the One Ring through Mordor. They hoped Sauron would believe that it was Aragorn who had the One Ring and was trying to forcibly remove Mordor from power. While Frodo and Sam led by Gollum were on their way to Mordor, they passed through the Marshes. They see the previously mentioned dead bodies and Gollum points out that they are only shaped to see, but not to touch. Not far away from the Dead Marshes lay another swamp, the Nindalf located next to Emyn Muil hills. Between the years' TA 1899 to TA 1944, the site witnessed many battles between the forces of Gondor and the Wainriders. The collective battles left Dagorlad destroyed and contaminated. The battle site turned into a wasteland covered with poisonous grime.
