Drúedain

Drúedain were Wild Men who lived in the Drúadan Forest in the late Third Age. These Wild Men of the woods were also called Woses or Púkel-men as they inhabited Old Púkel land.

The Drúedain were the first clan to exit Hildórien, the land of the Elves' awakening in Middle Earth. They crossed Anduin and settled in Beleriand along with the Haladin of the House of Haleth. This second House of Men were occupants of the forest of Brethil. They were loved and well understood by the Elves. [1]

The Kingdom of Númenor was established by the Dúnedain of Beleriand. After the Downfall of Númenor, the entire Drúedain clan took refuge in the mountains of Andrast.
Some of the Wild Men worked as fishermen and fowlers. They were terrified of the Púkel-men and never crossed the Isen.

The Drúedain continued to reside in the Drúadan Forest of the White Mountains and were terrified of Sauron, and the Rohirrim, who stalked them for sport. During the War of the Ring, the Drúedain belonging to the race of Ghân-buri-Ghân helped Rohirrim. Their poisoned arrows aided them in warding off the Orcs, who roamed in Anórien. This enabled the Rohirrim to reach the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and defeat Sauron. This brave act of theirs held the Drúedain in high esteem among other Men.

The Drúadan Forest was totally handed over to them by King Aragorn II Elessar. Outsiders were utterly forbidden from entering, and these Woses were never interested in mingling with the Free People.

In bodily appearance, they resembled the Dwarves with thick legs, hulking limbs, and shorter lengths. The broad faces with blunt noses and mighty brows looked awkward. The wide mouths were the most conspicuous part of their face. [2] The eyes were tiny, buried, black, and beamed with a red glow when frustrated. Their head was scantily haired, and most men had no hair below their eyebrows except for a few with tufts on their chin. They had deep, hoarse voices and a highly infectious laugh showing their exuberance.

These Wild Men were very primitive and excelled at wood and stone crafting. They possessed magical healing powers using stones. In nature, they were fun-loving as the hobbits but could get ruthless. They ate sporadically and survived drinking vast amounts of water. They lived in heavily guarded mountain caverns and also used them as a storehouse during extreme weather. In general, they used tents or shelters built around trees for dwelling. Poison-darts and arrows were the most commonly used armor.

Aghan, a Drúedain of the First Age, dwelled in the Forest of Brethil and was well aware of the poisons used by Orcs. Ghân-buri-Ghân, a Drúedain chief of the Third Age who inhabited the Drúadan Forest. His two sons were named Khôr-buri-Ghân and Bhai-buri-Ghân.
