Far Harad was the name of the southernmost region of Middle Earth. It was part of a larger zone called the Harad, located south of Gondor and Mordor.[1] The other portion was called the Near Harad. However, their borders were not clearly demarcated. Near Harad was located close to Mordor and Gondor, while Far Harad, to the land of Umbar.
Geography
Far Harad was a massive region covered with grasslands and jungles. Many exotic trees and plants were growing in this region. It was home to many animals; thus, Far Harad was an excellent place to hunt. Being a vast landscape, Far Harad had several types of climatic conditions throughout the year. Giant Mûmakil were abundant in the forests of Far Harad. They were generally captured, domesticated, and used in wars as moving towers. The western edge of this region was surrounded by the Grey Mountains. Many rivers jetted through this region. This region was not familiar with the people living in the northwestern parts of Middle-earth. There is minimal information available regarding the culture or language of the men of Far Harad. The Men of Harad were called Haradrim. The men of Far Harad had darker skin.
History
Second Age
A significant chunk of the Haradrim was controlled by the Númenóreans.
Third Age
A few Haradrim fought in the War of the Ring and the Battle of Pelennor Fields as part of Sauron's army. In the Return of the King, the Haradrim were referred to as "black men like half-trolls with white eyes and red tongues". They were also called Troll-men. [2]
