History
One of the oldest species ever to live in Mordor, the Graugs dwelled in several places like the Núrn, Gorgoroth, Seregost until the Blue Mountains. As per Dwarf Torvin, these gigantic creatures usually slept and lived in the caves. The citizens of Mordor saw these creatures sleep both during the night and day.
Bestiary
Primarily resident near the Sea of Núrnen, these Graugs also inhabited the Udûn region of Mordor. Trollslike features, massive claws, and teeth to gorge with and devour their prey were notable characteristics of these Graugs. Though they were not intellectually conscious, they were tough to hunt. Their gargantuan stature, naturally armored skin, and scales served as a weapon against enemies. They could bring down enemies using just a stomp, slam, or arm sweep. They devoured Uruks and Ghuls. Their weak points were the fleshy, soft ankles. [1] There were several different categories of Graug found in Mordor:
- Graugs
- Horned Graugs
- Legendary White Graugs
- Wretched Graugs
- Poison Graugs of Nurn
- Flame Graugs of Gorgoroth
- Frost Graugs of Seregost
Subspecies Description
Olog-Graug
Olog Graugs are a class of Graug in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor found across the Sea of Nurnen. These Graugs, not as prevalent as normal Graugs, were bigger and leather-skinned. However, they outnumbered Horned Graugs or the Legendary Graug in Mordor.
Horned Graug
Horned Graugs found throughout Mordor were reared than the Olog Graug but were more common than the Legendary Graug. They were considered rare as they were spotted only around the Sea of Núrnen. With more prominent horns and concrete plate armor, these were better-developed versions of the Graugs.
Legendary White Graug
The legendary white Graug, the tallest in the species of Graug, roamed only around the Sea of Núrnen. As the name suggests, they were white-skinned with more giant horns and teeth than others in their family. Legendary Graugs devour Ghûls rather than humanoid creatures. One of the members of this species was responsible for Gorvin’s death. In the online game, this Graug is killed during the course of the game by Talion.
Wretched Graug
Wretched Graugs are only encountered in the Lord of the Hunt downloadable version of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. All the vile members of this sub-race were once a normal Graug. However, they had transformed into Wretched Graugs as they mutated and grew poisonous due to excess consumption of Ghûl acid. These Graugs resembled a Horned Graug in size and appearance. The Ghul’s toxic bile led to the growth of green fur, horns, tumors, and a colossal sac in the throat of Wretched Graugs. They were capable of a lethal spew that could harm most creatures in close vicinity leading to death. This spew’s poisonous nature lasted for around 10 seconds. However, each time they used this form of attack, the Graug’s health degraded by a small percentage. The Wretched Graugs found only in the Sea of Nurnen were led by the Beastmaster Warchiefs.
Frost Graugs
Frost Graugs were adapted to survive in ice-cold environments and were capable of enduring the fiercest of snows. They had strong hands to grab their enemies. A Frost Graug could hurl vast masses of ice over long distances and freeze enemies using its frost breath. These were spotted in the Seregost region.
Fire Graugs
One of the fiercest Graugs, the Fire Graugs, could spit fire and lava out of their mouth. They possessed a skin reminiscing of a volcano, with four large canines and smoke curling out of their nostrils. They lived near Mount Doom.
Poison Graug
Similar in resemblance to the Wretched Graugs, The Poison Graug, could spew lethal poison and coated any projectiles they launched with poison. They inhabited the wilds of Núrnen.
