  1. Group
  2. Thorin and Company

The group consists of thirteen Khazad, the wizard Olórin, and a Hobbit. During the Third Age of 2941, it was headed by the Mountain King. They allied to reclaim the lost realm of Erebor from the firedrake dragon. The Mountain King's interest in reclaiming his family's lost realm had sparked when he met with the wizard. The meeting had been one of the factors Oakenshield allied with the dwarves. His family lost the kingdom to the firedrake dragon. The wizard was the one who recruited Baggins to their growing group. He had experience traveling with the Hobbit, and he remembered how bold he was. He knew of Bilbo’s specific skill set with cunningness and stealthiness. The down to earth attitude of the Hobbit can also influence the ill-tempered dwarves. These being believed in superstitions and the number thirteen brings bad luck. They did not have a second thought in welcoming the new member of their group.

An Account of the Past

The Story Behind the Group Assembly

In the Third Age of 2941, the group with the wizard finally came to the home of the Hobbit Bilbo. It was at the end of Bagshot Row. Bilbo welcomed the group with a delicious dinner. They presented their case to their host. He was still unsure of forging his allegiance to them. The wizard was the one who convinced him to join their cause.

Their Journey and Struggles

Thorin and Company.
On their journey, they crossed over the Mitheithel. It was a river in Eriador. The group was captured by the stone trolls that were already starving. They almost did not make it. The trolls were named William, Tom, and Bert. [1] The wizard arrived just to help them escape their death. The stone trolls would turn to rock if sunlight touched them. The group arrived at an Elven Town, Imladris. They met with the Lord of Imladris, and that is when they found out about the Dwarven runes. The runes were present in the Mountain King's map from Hithaeglir. It was also him who brought light into the presence of runes in Foe Hammer and Goblin Cleaver swords. He was the one who revealed their name to its bearers.

The group was on their way to a relevant passage over the Hithaeglir. It was called Cirith Forn en Andrath. They were seized by the goblins nearby. Fortunately, the wizard was not with them. They were brought to face the commander of all goblins. They knew the danger they were facing. Before they were harmed, the wizard appeared and slew the great commander. It was complete chaos; the death of the commander was their distraction to flee. Amid the chaos, Bilbo was trapped, and he was unable to escape with the rest of the group. The place where he was caught was Gollum's lair.

Thorin, and Company in The Battle of Five Armies.
It was there that he discovered the ring of power. Gollum was described as a dark creature similar to darkness itself. He had prominent eyes that you could not seem to forget. He found out accidentally the ring’s power. He could turn invisible. He too was surprised about it. He did not waste any time. He made his way out. He fled the cave and escaped goblin troops standing guard in the entryway. On his escape, he caught up with his group. They regrouped and plotted their next move of action. On their way to the mountains, a group of wargs intercepted their path. They had no choice but to run towards the trees.

Their enemies' reinforcement arrived too soon. They attacked the group by forcing them down the trees. They tried to set the trees on fire. The group thought that all was lost, but the giant eagles arrived just in time to rescue them. After their rescue, the group went straight to the estate of Beorn. When they retold their journey, their host was quite surprised. The host helped them get back on track. After their friend's estate, they were preparing their trip to go to Mirkwood forest. They were about to reach the end of the forest when the wizard informed them that he would stay behind.

The group was grateful for all the wizard's help but traveling without him was a loss. After bidding their goodbyes, they used the dark path to the forest. Finally, they had arrived at a place their previous host warned them about. He strictly instructed not to take any water from the stream. The water causes forgetting a lot of things and drowsiness. They were halfway through the creek when one of their group members slipped and fell into it. Right after they rescued him, he was fast asleep. The group had no choice but to carry him throughout the journey. They saw a Woodland Elves having a banquet. These creatures were responsible for the seizing of Oakenshield. The rest of his allies were trapped by the sapient spiders, the Children of Ungoliant.

Fortunately, Bilbo was not one of the captured. He had the chance to rescue them. He employed the authority of his ring. Soon after their release, the Elves caught up to them. They were all captured and put in a cell by Thranduil. Using the power of Bilbo's secret weapon, he once again evaded his pursuant. He plotted plans to rescue his companions. After a few days of planning, he helped his crew hide in barrels of wines. They went straight away to Esgaroth upon the Long Lake. [2] The people of the town accepted and helped them recover. Hope was not lost; they were still hoping to slay the firedrake dragon and reclaim their kingdom once and for all. After a gruesome journey, they finally arrived at the mountain.

The group was trying to find the Side-door. This door was a secret entryway to the realm in Erebor. They had no luck in finding it. A tiny bird known for its melodic songs helped them. Oakenshield ordered the Hobbit to scout the mountain. When Bilbo was inside, he had spoken to the firedrake dragon himself. Bilbo was using the ring to be out of sight. The fire breathing creature went straight to town and destroyed it out of his rage. The mountain was left unguarded for the group to scout the area. Consumed by his wrath, Smaug did not anticipate the assaults of Bard. It leads to his death.

The town was free from harm, but the casualties were massive. The group was oblivious that King Thranduil was already marching towards the mountain with his army. Everybody wants a piece of the unguarded treasure of the fallen firedrake dragon. They wanted payment for the destruction of their town. The Mountain King refused such demands, and his allies blockaded the area. The group sought out help from the Durin's Folk.

The War of the Allied Forces and the Company's Disbandment

Before the battle had begun, the group's aid for help came. Durin's Folk came. The wizard finally arrives, he was on time to give everyone a warning that Azog's army of Wargs and goblins were coming straight to where they are. The group went to an onslaught of battle. Bilbo stayed invisible to avoid chaos. Azog's army was a force to be reckoned with. The allied forces were about to be overwhelmed. The tide was tipped when the shape changer and the great eagles arrived to join the fight. The group had won over Azog's forces. The casualties and losses were massive from both parties. Oakenshield sustained fatal wounds. His nephews, Kili and Fili, died on the battlefield. The Mountain King was able to ask forgiveness from Bilbo. He then went home to Hobbiton with the wizard. He was rewarded with a fair share of wealth.

Oakenshield and the Company's Bequest

The wealth from the firedrake dragon had been the key to bring back the former glory of the Khazad-dûm of Erebor. Harmony and good fortune can be felt again. Oakenshield and his allies’ sacrifices resulted in the creation of the brotherhood composed of various representatives from nations and races. The secret meeting hosted by Elrond himself played a role in the coming wars.
