Kings of Rohan

The Nineteen recorded Lords of Rohan spanning from Eorl The Young to Elfwine, son of Éomer Éadig, who fought the war of the ring; are titled the ‘King of Rohan’. They were also called the King or the Lord of the Mark.

History

The House of Eorl was divided into three separate lines. The first line spans from the reign of Eorl the Young to the reign of Helm. [1] The Second Line began with the reign of Fréaláf Hildeson and span until the reign of Théoden. The Third Line involved Éomer and Élfwine.
  1. Eorl The Young, the son of Léod. He was the young Lord of the Éothéod in the north of Middle Earth. Upholding the ancient alliances of his people, he rode to the defense of Gondor in the distant South.
    He continued to fight against the enemies of Gondor and Rohan throughout his life and also fought in the battle in the Wold.
  2. Brego ruled for almost 25 years and was framed for building the hall of Meduseld in Edoras.
  3. Aldor The Old, being the longest-reigning of all Rohan’s Kings, ruled for almost 75 years. He came to the throne at the ripe age of 26 and ruled until his death. Throughout his reign, he saw the strengthening of the new realm of Rohan.
  4. Fréa ruled for 14 years.
  5. Fréawine remained in power for over 21 years.
  6. Goldwine ruled for 19 years.
  7. Déor during his reign, which lasted 19 years, raiders from Dunland occupied the defenses of Isengard.
  8. Gram ruled for 23 years to III 2741.
  9. Helm, also known as Helm Hammerhand owing to the strength of his fists, ruled for 18 years.
    During his reign, Helm led his people to shelter when the Dunlendings overran Rohan. This shelter later came to be known as ‘Helm’s Deep’.
  10. Fréaláf Hildeson, the son of Helm’s sister Hilld, Hildeson ruled for 39 years. He was the first King of the Second Line and succeeded in avenging his uncle by driving the Dunlendings out of Rohan.
  11. Brytta Léofa, was a generous and popular King who was loved by his subjects. He ruled for 44 Years.
  12. Walda reigned for 9 Years.
  13. Folca was a famous hunter and ruled for 13 Years.
  14. Folcwine captured the region known as West March and ruled for 39 Years.
  15. Fengle, the youngest son of Folcwine, ruled for 50 years.
  16. Thengel ruled for the span of 27 Years.
  17. Théoden, weakened by Saruman’s agent Grima Wormtongue for most of his reign, he ruled for 39 Years.
  18. Éomer was Théoden’s nephew and he ruled for 65 Years. [2]
  19. Elfwine was the last of the recorded Rohan’s Kings.
