Pallando was a Blue Wizard who came to Middle-Earth in TA 1000.

Biography

Pallando was a High Servant of the Valar who resided in the Undying Lands in the distant West. Also referred to as Rómestámo, Pallando came along with five Istari or Wizards to Middle-earth to help the Free Peoples against Sauron. This Maia of Oromë the Huntsman was asked to accompany Alatar, another Blue Wizard. They traveled with Curumo (Saruman the White) to fight against the increasing Easterlings and Southrons, the ardent followers of Sauron. Saruman, the head of the Order of Wizards, and the other wizards tried to convince the Easterlings to not support Sauron but rather confront him. But the Easterlings worshipped Sauron and aided him in his attack against the Gondorians. Pallando and Alatar did not return back to the northwestern territories of Middle-Earth, but Saruman did. There is no further positive information regarding Pallando or Alatar. Pallando was likely unsuccessful in his attempt to woo Sauron followers. Sauron's men could have been slain or became members of the Sauron army themselves and aided him. However, from the wizard's alternate name, Rómestámo, which means "helper of the East", there is a different story regarding these two wizards' fate. It is perceived that Pallando did not fail in his mission completely; instead, he played a prominent but inconspicuous role in the War of the Ring and in the Army of the West's victory. However, Gandalf, one of the wisest wizards, returned to the Undying Lands after the War of the Ring. The Blue Wizards who stayed back could have found newer traditions and cults carried over into the Fourth Age even after the doom of Sauron. [1]

Character

Pallando arrived in Middle-earth dressed in a sea-blue robe and looking like a man full of wisdom and knowledge. But he was not any older than Gandalf in appearance. Pallando and Alatar were referred to as "the Blue Wizards" or Ithryn Luin as they donned clothes colored sea-blue. [2] Pallando sported a grey beard. The length of his beard was not the same as either Gandalf's or Saruman's. All Istaris, including Pallando, held a staff primarily used to channelize their miraculous powers against the enemies.

Portrayal In Adaptations

The Hobbit Trilogy

The two Blue Wizards were first mentioned by Gandalf to Bilbo during one of their conversations. In the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo enquires about the number of Wizards known to Gandalf. Gandalf replies as Saruman, the two Blue Wizards (does not mention any names as he was unaware of them),Radagast, and himself. Gandalf's unawareness of the names was due to the filmmakers' lack of rights, though published in the J. R. R. Tolkien's Unfinished Tales.
