Scatha was a notable herculean long worm of the Grey Mountains. [1]
Biography
Scatha made his first appearance in the Third Age and lived on the southern slopes of the range. He amassed a fortune from the Dwarves and Men of the northern lands and constantly troubled them. Around TA 2000, he was killed by Fram, the son of Frumgar and the leader of Éothéod. His leftover fortune was a matter of dispute between the Men and the Dwarves of the Éothéod. The Horn of Rohan given by Eowyn to Meriadoc Brandybuck around the end of the Third Age was from Scatha's fortune. The Dwarves also claimed ownership of the Horn. However, Fram denied and delivered them a choker carved out of The Worm's teeth. Alongside was sent the verse, 'Jewels such as these you will not match in your treasuries, for they are hard to come by.' This greatly insulted the Dwarves, who may have killed Fram.
Speculations
It is inappropriate to say that The Worm was the cause of the death of Dwarves in Grey Mountains, Dain I, and Frór between TA 2570 to TA 2589. Scatha was killed by Fram in TA 2000. The dispute between the Men and Dwarves over Scatha's fortune must have been resolved, and part of it reached Rohan when the people of Fram settled there. [2] A few of the dragons that appeared on Middle Earth since the Second Age must have been Scatha's offspring if Scatha was born in the First Age. Scatha could have been one of the dragons of the Black Hand that ran off to the northeast after the Great Battle. Scatha might have been part of the army that attacked Gondolin seized its wealth after destruction. This is reiterated by the Elvish swords, Glamdring, Orcrist, and Sting, to describe Fram's fortune.

Scatha is mentioned while recounting the history of Fram and Éothéd. It is said that Scatha attacked Framsburg and mauled Frumgar's arm that held the sword. To seek revenge, Fram hunted for Scatha for almost two years.
