A hobbit in the Shire, Lotho Sackville belonged to the Sackville-Baggins family. For a brief period by the end of the Third Age, he took control over the Shire illegally. Lotho was also called “Lotho pimple” or “little pimple” due to his poor complexion and facial blemishes.
History
Lotho was an extremely unpopular hobbit, disliked by all in the Shire. He always desired to have the Bag-End all to himself. After waiting for 62 years, his desires were foiled when Bilbo’s nephew Frodo inherited the home in the year SR 1418 of Shire Reckoning. [1] He instead inherited pipe-weed plantations in Southfarthings wherein he sold pipe-weeds to people away in the South. These people were Human men and women, also known as the Ruffians. He sold a ton of pipeweed and became rich and powerful. Meanwhile, when Frodo left for Rivendell, he used Frodo’s absence to take control over Bag-Ends and set himself up as the Chief of The Shire. Through his pipe-weed trade, he became an accomplice of Saruman through one of his clients who had Orcish-like traits, the Squint-eyed Southerner. With the money, Lotho began to buy several landsand properties all over the Shire. Under his rule, the Shire was completely industrialized. He took the help of the Ruffians to control and suppress the people of the Shire. However, he was stripped of his power pretty quickly when Saruman gained control. It is said that Saruman’s servant Grima Wormtongue eventually killed Lotho, and either buried him or ate his body. [2]
