Just noticed that our own
Merry wiki includes
Kalimac Brandagamba
Edit: Gateway does too, but this wasn't originally posted here.
Also . . .
"The Nazgûl injured King Théoden, compelling Éowyn, and Merry to defend the king and battle the Witch-king of Angmar themselves. In this crucial battle, Merry helped Éowyn defeat the Witch-king by stabbing him in the leg just as Éowyn was about to be struck down. Merry’s attack allowed Éowyn to kill the Witch-king herself."
. . . in my opinion a better approach/summary of this than the current Gateway version.
Yet since I'm in pedantic mode, I'd even slash this just a bit more to:
" . . . compelling Éowyn , and Merry to defend the king and battle the Witch-king of Angmar themselves. In this crucial battle, Merry helped Éowyn . . . " (and so on, as worded).
I realize this is
very pedantic, purposely skipping over the notion that Merry obviously wanted to stand by
Theoden in any case, but couldn't. . . and of course when Éowyn is threatened . . .
And I just noticed this after looking at the text in the book: at first Merry's
"will made no answer" -- that is, again, he wanted to defend Theoden (
"King's Man! King's Man!"), but couldn't
will his body to action at this point. Compare the "spell" that was broken by Merry's blade -- the spell that knit the wraith's (unseen) sinews to its will.
Hmm. Anyway. Just my unasked for opinions.
