In the scene in the movies, when Frodo, Sam, and Gollum are outside the Black Gate, and the Easterlings march past, they seem to be coming from the wrong direction. Or is this incorrect
.

It kind of looks like they're marching from the west to east, instead of east to west.

Short question before I start digging in TT the book: aren't these supposed to be Southrons in the film?

They were marching from the south up from Ithilien to turn right into the gates pf Mordor. It never made any sense to me since Easterlings were from Rhun, which was northeast of Mordor.
At least marching from the south makes sense with mountains of Mordor on their right, to the east.
And it would have to be in earlier morning after sunrise, sun climbing up in the eastern sky, for their shadows to be that long.

No, it doesn't make any sense. For Haradians, yes. For Easterlings, no. For the Easterlings to be marching from the south northward to the Black Gate of Mordor, they would have had to march from Rhun southward east of Mordor, cut west through Khand, then march north through Ithilien. The direct route would be to march south and hang a right and come in the back door of Mordor from the east, or march southwest from Rhun and hang a left into the Black Gate. ;)

I wasn't commenting on the fact that PJ obviously forgot to include some experienced people from National Geographic among his advisers.
Anyone marching from the south would have the western mountains of Mordor on their right, to the east, as would be the rising sun in the morning.
Marching from the east, they would have the northern mountains of Mordor on their left, to the south, as well as the midday sun.
Easterlings marching along the northern mountains of Mordor with mountains and sun to their right would be marching west to east, as @Aethelwulf noted.
But there is one more monkey wrench in this messed-up scene:
As filming was done in the southern hemisphere, someone marching east to west would have the midday sun on their right, to the north! But the mountains should still be on their left, south of them ... 🥴
