I wasn't commenting on the fact that PJ obviously forgot to include some experienced people from
National Geographic among his advisers.
Anyone marching from the south would have the
western mountains of
Mordor on their right, to
the east, as would be the rising sun in the morning.
Marching from the east, they would have the northern
mountains of Mordor on their left, to the south, as well as the midday sun.
Easterlings marching along the northern mountains of Mordor with mountains and sun to their right
would be marching west to east, as
@Aethelwulf noted.
But there is one more monkey wrench in this messed-up scene:
As filming was done in the southern hemisphere, someone marching east to west
would have the midday sun on their
right, to the north! But the mountains should still be on their left, south of them ... 🥴
