Drawing SRG's drawings

Here's Curufin. I drew this a few months ago. It was meant to be Fëanor at first, but then I thought he looked too cool and calculating (and too small/skinny).

Merry Mettarë 2024!

Man, it’s certainly been a year, hasn’t it? 😵‍💫🫠
But you know what, we got through it. Time to party before the next one hits us, and by God’s grace this one’ll be a bit more manageable. 😂

merry-mettare-2024.jpg

Curvo: *jubilant and looking a bit green around the gills* Merry Mettarrrë, mateys! *hic!*

Maitimo: *slowly moves the rum away from Curvo*

Tyelko: Don’t mind if I do… *reaches for it, hiding pillaged candy*

Tiny, his Pirate Parrot: *nom nom*

Finno, Ghost of Mettarë Past (who is looking a bit bedraggled as his ship caught on fire, was sunk by cannons in a sea battle, and disappeared into the depths never to be seen again), is singing a haunting tune… and radiating undimmed and inescapable joy and light. 😱

Glorfindel is breaking the fourth wall and bringing a couple of anachronisms to the party, wearing sunglasses to shield himself from the disembodied fëa’s unearthly radiance, and plugging the harp into a speaker facing us so everyone can hear its joyful song.

Laurinalótë: *singing along* 🎶

And pirate Curvo is only a Bittle Lit Drunk, thank you very much. I also have a peg leg, after losing the original Flesh-and-Bone Left Foot in a Dramatic and Very Dashing Incident in which I had to Evade Fired Cannonballs. >_>

Note on the Costumes. :D

I decided these Elven pirates would be 17th century pirates, seeing as long flowing hair was fashionable then (though in the Elves’ case, they don’t need wigs for the effect!).

Maitimo is a very aristocratic looking pirate captain, of course. With a hook hand.

Tyelko and Curvo are wearing matching woollen sailor hats, but Curvo’s outfit is a bit fancier (Tancaquárë thinks it suits him very much...).
Though Curufin does like wearing red and white, I most often imagine him wearing black lined with silver (which happens to match his hair and eyes).

^yes, it is a reference to this, and red and white just so happens to also be suitable for Christmas…!

Fingon was a prince (and eventually king) who captained his own fleet. He was the victor of many sea battles… until this one…

Glorfindel isn’t a sailor, because I thought of something which would suit him better: musketeer! He’s wearing a uniform with the emblems of his house.
Pirate Curvo’s nickname for him is a multidimensional pun (totally intentional, and not because his brains are addled by drink): Glorfindel -> Goldilocks -> ??? -> Goldflintlock. Flintlock is a type of firing mechanism seen in some 17th century firearms. 😂

This is absolutely fantastic!! There are so many little details, I'm sure it will take my brain a while to process them all!

Maitimo's 17th century pirate outfit?! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 FABULOUS! I do agree that would be a good time period for him. I really like that period in general, though I'm not as knowledgeable of it as I am the 18th century and later. But it's such a dramatic period for fashion. And the movie The Man in the Iron Mask might just be my second favorite movie of all time, and when I saw it, Philippe reminded me of perhaps a blond version of Maitimo... (he was tortured for years, has a noble heart, loves his mom, and is pretty, lol.)

Anyway, time to end my rabbit trail and get back to the drawing!

Of course Tyelko is going sleeveless in this presumably cold weather because of course he is!

The stool looks a little short for Maitimo. I'm sure he deals with this problem a lot!

I love the swaggering, cheerful drunk Curvo! Probably better for the fun, happy mood of the picture that he's the one drunk, and Maitimo is sober. Though the rum is close to him...

Also, Curvo's outfit is very sleek and elegant!

I like Fingon's tattered ghost outfit, his blinding Glow of Positivity, and the way his hands and arms are translucent over the lyre. I wonder how he manages to hold it and play it, though?

I do love Musketeer Glorfy with Anachronistic Sunglasses and Speaker! But my favorite thing about his side of the picture is the tiny detail I only noticed after a few minutes of studying the picture: LAURINALOTË!!!

Thank you so much for this thoughtful work of art! Merry Christmas, little bro! *hugs you whether you like it or not*

It's more because the table would be too low for him if the seat was at a normal person height. But then the low seat means he has to fold his legs up more. Either way, he can't win, and a pirate ship is a cramped place. 😂

Yeah... Good thing Maitimo is only focused on pushing the rum away from Curvo. Perhaps that was Curufin's plan all along: to sufficiently disturb his brother with his peculiar drunk behaviour so he wouldn't slip into thinking darker thoughts...

Ghost Finno still manages to hold things and move them around in our chaotic RPs. (Like a bucket for drunk Curvo 🙃)

I've read the book maybe a couple of times, but haven't seen that movie. It is a really good story.

When he's outside the forge, I most often imagine him wearing something similar to this, though without that style of collar and boots (and peg leg!). 😊

Hehehe, I'm glad you liked it. I chose the colours based on your suggestion that a burgundy and ivory Santa hat would suit Maitimo.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful work of art! Merry Christmas, little bro! *hugs you whether you like it or not*
*Curufin accepts the affection rather more easily, as it is an expression of thanks for something he made*
*still blushes and remains awkwardly silent, because it is thanks for something he made*

Ahhhh! I love this! Everyone looks like they're having a fantastic time. Now I understand the cryptic message you sent me! 🤣

I love the way you designed everyone's costumes. The musketeer concept for Glorfindel was ingenious! Not to mention the delightful use of anachronisms! (I got giddy just from the vocabulary choice alone. 😂) Seriously, the uniform is so good, and the tunic & mantle look like a legitimate outfit he would wear in Gondolin. I note your attentive detail to putting celandine on the mantle, just as he is described wearing in BOLT2; I applaud you!

And what a joy to see Laurinalótë present! She sure knows Fingon's song is so very worth the listen-to; plus, the dramatic story behind it needs to be heard! Also, Fingon's costume looks so ghostly and in a way gives me Maglor vibes, both with the harp and silhouette. What stands out in contrast, of course, is the radiance shining out from him with apparent joy! 😎 Very cool and very bright of you. 😉

Looks like it's rubbing off on Curufin! Maybe when he's got some drink in him, his fëa is more receptive to the magic of the Sunshine Bros... Either way, happy Curvo is delightful to see! And I love how his and Tyelko's hats are the flip of each other's in terms of patternage. Very cleverly done! Including Tiny in this was ingenious as well!

And in between them, we have Maedhros looking utterly dashing in his uniform, complete with that look of brotherly content on his face. I sense he is glad Curvo is feeling cheery while also ensuring he doesn't overdrink, typical of the Dadtimo instinct. 😂

I love every single thing about this!! Arrrrrrr!

I did find this a little funny, really. He wears a rayed sun and flowers, which reminded me of the king of France for most of the 17th century: Louis XIV, a.k.a. 'Le Roi Soleil' (the Sun King). Flowers (usually gold in colour) are a heraldic symbol used by the kings of France, though they are fleur-de-lis (perhaps a depiction of lilies or irises) rather than celandine. 😂

Very cool and very bright of you. 😉

Curufin is unexpectedly adorable in this mood, lol.
He has a fairly low tolerance to alcohol, so it makes him feel physically terrible quite quickly, but for some reason it also lifts his mood into one of cheery silliness. It kind of makes sense given his occasional jokey tendencies, so maybe it temporarily makes him think 'backwards' and brings the silliness to the fore.

Yes! Ironically, House of the Golden Flower is a reference to the sun itself, hence the emblem being the 8-rayed sun. It took me longer than it should have to recognize that's what it meant. Diatribe, it took me hilariously even longer to realize House of the Heavenly Arch is a reference to the rainbow, quite literally. And their emblem is a rainbow! These depictions of nature really throw me one! 🤣

Thambë Carnistirwa
(Carnistir's Room)

What is something Elves are good at? Reflecting on the past. Well, here I am reflecting on the past. :D

After I first read the Silmarillion, I suddenly became very interested in Tolkien's world and characters. I often played Minecraft at the time, and I created a new world where I only used Quenya. I even switched the game's language to it (which is possible!).
I changed my username to Carnistir (Caranthir's name in Quenya), and built a lot of interesting things. My main creation was a massive underground fortress, of which only the domed top showed. But even this dome was hidden, deep underwater in a huge lake. Looking back at it, my grammar was probably not the best, and Fëanor would be most certainly facepalming reading my signs, named items and books in the game.

Back then, I didn't have anyone to share this interest of mine with. Nor did I really want to, at the time. But now that I have found people who share this interest, I wouldn't go back at all.
So this new drawing is a little piece of the past to share with you. It's coloured only in pencil, as I would have done at the time, and Caranthir wears purple, gold, black and red (which is also how I imagined him at the time).

thambe carnistirwa scan.jpg

The furniture and items in the room are mostly based on things in my Minecraft world.
The parchment on the wall shows the dome at the top of my hidden fortress. The words above are 'turmen carnistirwa' ('Carnistir's realm') in Tengwar, as writing with these letters was another interest of mine back then.
The hanging banner on the right is one I created in the game to represent Carnistir's underwater realm.

Below is Carnistir's actual bedroom in the game, and you can see the similarities.

I took another picture of my drawing with my phone (the one above is a scan). Here it is, just to compare. It improves the sharpness of the lines, but the colours are less accurate (it makes poor Moryo dreadfully pale!).

So I was onto something when I said in the delirium of insomnia last night that your Nether star reminded me of a Silmaril! 😂

I really like how you translated a minecraft build into more of a real-world drawing. And I'm mind blown by the tiny writing on the picture on the wall. It's so tiny and neat!

I also like the little detail of the motion lines as he's writing. He looks faintly annoyed, but thinking-- which seems very in-character for him!

It does indeed have the right colours for one.
I used the Nether star as a Star of Fëanor in my build. I had a medieval-style texture pack which actually turned it into an eight-pointed star (this texture pack isn't present in my game screenshot above though).

I love tiny neat stuff. 😂

Well, I am a comic artist primarily. I like putting motion and expression into my still life. 😁

Like Maedhros said, that really does look cool :O I haven't read the messages above this, so I don't know if it was already explained, but what drew you to Caranthir?

Also, what texture pack were you using, and how do you change the language to Quenya 😮?
Usually I use the Norse Mythology Texture Pack, as I've liked the look of that one best, but I'm always interested to find other good ones. I play on Bedrock, myself, and as such fear the possibility of Quenya may be unavailable to me...but if not, it would be a pleasure to use as practice!

Like Maedhros said, that really does look cool  I haven't read the messages above this, so I don't know if it was already explained, but what drew you to Caranthir?
This is the general thread for all my Tolkien drawings, so the messages above are about different drawings. You haven't missed anything. 😁

I'm not really sure what drew me to him. Perhaps I felt some kind of kinship with him in the last two years of high school, being a solitary person wrapped up in my own private projects. Caranthir in Beleriand lived on his own, while his realm lasted.

Also, what texture pack were you using, and how do you change the language to Quenya 😮?
See here for the Minecraft in Quenya:
It's just one of the normal language options.

I used the John Smith Legacy texture pack:
I use Java Minecraft, but it's available for Bedrock too.
