Will The Silmarillion Movie ever be made?

In my opinion, it will be made in 6 movies. My estimates are as follows; (edit for brevity) 5- The Tale of the Children of Hurin, the Dwarves' Sack of Doriath, the Second and Third Kinslayings, and the Fall of Gondolin

By the way, do you mean all this in one film?

And if so, do you realize how long this would take to film using sleepy cats for every character?

Also consider that for a good chunk of this time, they are likely to simply ignore any director!

In any case, so far, my film of Húrin's children, even with human actors, is four hours over two absolutely incredible films!

I've already cast my Lalaith. . .
played by Anya Taylor Joy. . .

who shows up unexpectedly at
the end . . . saving Túrin and

killing Glaurung!

Oh that's right my unsuspecting
audience: you only thought she
had died young!

If you noticed, I said 3 hours for each movie, including the movie of the part you quoted. But Children of Hurin could even take 4 hours, as you said. There are 8 Beleriand wars in which Turin participated.

I still don't notice this :) 'cause you posted:

And then you listed 6. . . well, 6 "movies" it would appear (according to this); but you never say anything about three hours. . . for anything.

Not in this thread at least.

Yea, I think I didn't say 3 hours. But I say 3 hours for each movie. I think if each of the 6 movies is 3 hours, the stories will fit.

If they ever do make a Silmarillion movie, it had better be exactly like what I dreamed about just now, or else I will riot!

I dreamed I was watching a new animated movie set in the Third Age, and I saw an extremely buff, silver-haired Elf. I was like, lol, Celegorm! And then he actually burst into song, singing about how he is Celegorm, everyone's favorite Elf!

Then the movie proceeded to flash back to some of the events of the Silmarillion. I only really remember the Maedhros rescue scene, and how it was surprisingly heartfelt and well-done. Maedhros even had curly hair! I believe the movie took it all the way up to Maedhros' suicide. These were all only brief flashbacks touching on some of the Silm's major events, but I remember being very pleased with the execution.

Then the movie turned back to the Third Age, and some guy who lived in a huge manor had a super scary ghost problem. The movie was building this up to be like, a wraith of Sauron or something very evil like that. But then it was revealed that the ghost was just Fëanor and his sons!! And they were just trying to chill and eat ice cream sandwiches, not trying to be evil and haunt anyone or anything. I don't remember all the details, but it was hilarious.

What was especially funny about this is that the movie was very much marketed to be a Lord of the Rings movie. Nothing about the Silm or Sons of Fëanor was mentioned at all in any of the trailers.

And they were just trying to chill and eat ice cream sandwiches, not trying to be evil and haunt anyone or anything.
So those murderous psychopaths just needed some ice cream to stop their kin murdering crusade???

Welp. Glad we are living in the Seventh Age of Middle-earth. Not so glad fact, jury is still out on those pesky crusades.

Hey, hey, no, he didn't steal anything! He sang a musical number and ate ice cream sandwiches!

I do remember his muscles swelling comically larger and larger throughout the song, though. But it was very much a goofy cartoon thing, and not like, a really attractive thing.

...Also, this is the second time this week you've shown me that cursed picture. Are you trying to set me up with that creepy Elf?? I'm not Aredhel!!

It would be incredibly exciting to see a Silmarillion adaptation, and as mentioned above, there is so much material that it could easily fill multiple movies.

However, there is a lesser-known but fascinating detail from Tolkien’s legendarium that he once wrote but later removed: Mandos' Second Prophecy. This is an apocryphal text that suggests Morgoth will one day return at the end of the world, leading to a final, ultimate battle. Although Tolkien did not include this prophecy in the published Silmarillion, it is interesting to imagine how such a story might unfold.

According to the prophecy, after a long exile, Morgoth would eventually break free from the Void (the Outer Darkness) and once again bring destruction to the world of Arda. This would be the last battle, where the Valar (the divine powers) would intervene once more. In this war, Fionwë, one of the greatest warriors of the Valar (later known as Eönwë), would lead the armies against Morgoth. Some versions even suggest that Túrin Turambar himself would strike the final blow against Morgoth, avenging all the suffering he had brought upon the world.

This final war would serve as a sort of cosmic closure for Tolkien’s mythology: the world would be restored, the Silmarils would be recovered, and perhaps Arda itself would be reborn. While this is a removed and unofficial storyline, it would still be fascinating to see such a concept brought to life as an epic cinematic conclusion.

What do you think? If a grand Tolkien cinematic universe were ever created, could this story have a place in it?

I could joke all I want, but on a serious note (even I am drunk now), a Silmarillion movie is impossible.
Several movies - impossible!
Series? Yeah.. I think that's possible.

But these series.. oh boy... the screenplay must be written so carefully and so smart, that it hurts me to think...
But it's not impossible.
The biggest issue is very beginning of Silmarilion... and where would you wrap your first season?
In my mind... even eons have passed (in real lore)... The shortest way to end season 1 would be showing Feanor forging his Silymarilis (but I think it would be boring).
But realistically.. end of season 1 should be at least to the moment when Feanor swore an terrible oath... something like that...
End of second season 2 could be hanging of Maedros, and rescuing him... and if producers, and money landers are in hurry... then... Fingolfin VS Morgoth...
And so on...

But to do all of this you need to have a really good team, and people able to adopt to other people ideas.
To be compatible people.. like me...

Now, who disagree anything I wrote above... You know nothing!

Sadly, I don't think so, there are way too many issues with it.

For starters, the Tolkien estate refused to sell the rights. I think they were pretty pissed off with PJ's adaptations and they didn't want the same to happen with the Silmarillion.

Second, it would be way way too expensive. The Silmarillion is a lot more epic than LOTR. There are 6 major battles of which they will have to show in detail at least 4.

The narrative is complex and people that didn't read (and understood) the Silmarillionn would be lost.

And there would be issues with the casting. Too many important characters and many of them would only have limited screen time because they are killed (for example Feanor) or they are central figures late (e.g. Tuor, Idril, Earendil, Elwing). Very few will be present the whole move, like Morgoth or Thingol.

Having said that, I think the Silmarillion contains stories that could make a movie in its own right. Beren and Luthien of course, Tuor and Idril, the children of Hurin would be too depressing.

We'd actually have Tevildo!
Please no

According to the news in the link, the Silmarillion movie series is not far away at all. How many movies do you think will be made if it is made? Write your predictions and what topics will be covered in each movie. In my opinion, it will be made in 6 movies. My estimates are as follows;

1- The Creation of the Valar, the Wars of the Valar, and the Battle of the Powers
2- Life in Valinor, Melkor's Destroying of the Two Trees, Stealing of the Silmarils, the First Battle, and Dagor-Nuin-Giliath
3- Dagor Aglareb, the Siege of Angband, Dagor Bragollach, and the Duel of Fingolfin and Morgoth
4- The Tale of Beren and Luthien and the Nirnaeth Arnoediad
5- The Tale of the Children of Hurin, the Dwarves' Sack of Doriath, the Second and Third Kinslayings, and the Fall of Gondolin
6- The War of Wrath
I missed this. I don't think Peter Jackson will direct the Silmarillion. Christopher Tolkien despised his adaptations and I don't think the Tolkien estate would ever give him the rights (and right they are). If they really want to make the Silmarillion, bring in James Cameron or Spielberg and keep a close look at the script.

I can see PJ messing up with the DD, bringing back Feanor and Turin just to please audiences. PJ had serious issues dealing with the source material in LOTR and the Hobbit. The Silmarillion is way more complex.

Going to have to live with it. Book purists aren't the target audience and PJ is the proverbial face ofTolkien.

I think once we accept this we can feel some sense of peace.
