So Andy Serkis is facing heated backlash and boycotts of his movie, for an interview he recently gave as production starts. I read some of it, and it at least gives me a modicum of hope that he knows what he is doing.

It is really weird how fast the switch-up was, though.

P.S. If any Admin knows best, feel free to cast this Silmaril in the sea. No worries about it. :)

He would have faced backlash either way. It's the same with every major release these days. As there's nothing he could have said that would have pleased all sides, I think he maneuvered this minefield of a 'discussion' somewhat well. One can only hope we're done with it for this movie.

And wasn't it clear how the cast would look like? It's not like the movie is a standalone or something new. It is a sequel/prequel/whatever to a franchise with a unique and well known aesthetic, that has its own base material in a chokehold for 25 years. Did anyone think Serkis would have deliberately swapped out Ian McKellen as Gandalf for any other actor be he white or not? Ridiculous! Everything will be adhering to PJs version, no matter what. This 'discussion' and the folllowing 'backlash' is click-/ragebait. The only proper way to deal with bait, is to refuse to take it.

You raise a perfectly good point.

I think a lot of fans have latched on to ROP's aesthetic, for better or worse.

It surely is a bit of cognitive dissonance.

Thank you for adding to the conversation!

Ents do not have to worry about such frivolity and trifles.
All too true, Ent fears. Ents ponder, and as days pass to years, years to decades, decades to centuries, and centuries to ages, that which is important does alter in its condition within time.
Hewmans, having so little time, rarely get beyond 'the immediate' commanding a great deal of their attention and being. Thus, whether there is sufficient red, or blue, or green, or orange in a painting becomes paramount, deserving massive investment of the hewmans-self and consumption of its resources.

Oh, to see beyond the issue and impact of the immediate.

Ent offers a solution: Ponder.

To ponder means to think deeply, carefully, and thoroughly about a subject, "weighing"* different options, consequences, or possibilities in your mind before arriving at a conclusion.**

*To "weigh" In a cognitive or decision-making context, is the analytical process of evaluating, balancing, and assigning relative value to competing information, options, or arguments. It applies critical thinking and frameworks to synthesize possibilities, stripping away bias** to yield a balanced, objective perspective.

**note: the hewman's single greatest problem is comprised of the inability to both recognize, then strip away, bias, coupled with the inability to do anything before drawing a conclusion.

Ents are creatures of Eru.
Ents have been gifted with free will; ergo that can choose good or evil.
Ents can suffer from cognitive dissonance and intellectual bias.
Ents can, and do, commit any of the "Seven Deadly Sins" beginning with the greatest and most pernicious one, Pride.
The difference between acts of the will by Humans and act of the Will by Ents is one of degree, not kind.

Just sayin'.

As say you should..!
Pondering properly should always include a significant dose of healthy introspection - hard though that often is, in both the effort, and the results.

AI de-ageing of the same actors that are 25 years older. It makes the Peter Jackson's Middle Earth vision fans happy I guess. *yawn*
Indeed for some it will. And every removable stop is pulled out to allow the flood of ideas generating more revenue. The purpose of the medium is entirerly different than the purpose of the books. Always was. Always will be. Yawners for some, awareness for others, reduction of tensions for many.
The makers hope for but one thing. Maximized revenue.
The fans hope for something based on their preferences.
The very fact that people are split based in the whole thing can but benefit the makers, as the thing is constantly spoken about, argued over, and "at the fore" for those even remotely interested in Tolkien. It all equals advertising, expanding reach, thus generating more money, in one way or another.
Make no mistake - the Tolkien 'fanbase' whatever form it takes, is the greatest marketer in play here.

I'm sure Serkis and those standing to gain the most from the movies, are very happy this Forum is adding to their efforts.
