It's clear that those two somehow survived it, but could there be others, like perhaps the Watcher in the Water or the Nameless creatures way under Moria?

Could they, perhaps, be cast-off creations of Morgoth? One's that were rejected, perhaps?Same goes for Watcher in the Water and Nameless creatures, I never thought of them as Maia's... I thought always, they are more like prehistoric beasts. Strong and powerful - yes, but not of angelic origin.
I believe Tolkien said one or two survived. So there may be more than one Balrog left. If any else survived they do not show up. It's possible Orc-form Maiar survived, or other, lesser, Maia.Possibly that more Maia's, then just that one Balrog survived, and maybe they also hid somewhere, and were not anymore interested in war's and politics of M.E.... they retired, one could say.![]()
The theory is that Ungoliant is a Maia since we lack another explanation for what she is and how she got her power. How do we arrive at Shelob being descended from a Maia?
i suspected this was the issue. Thanks.
Ahh sorry, I should have explained that.
Yeah.. maybe..Could they, perhaps, be cast-off creations of Morgoth? One's that were rejected, perhaps?
Yes, but it says she served him not as a slave like the others, but of her own will to gain what she wanted to get. He could not control or dominate her as he could everything else.Silmarillion it was mentioned that she once served him,
Yeah, I've heard of theory that she represents Void (or Tom represents force of nature)I've very different views of what Ungoliant is and represents... but won't deal with it here.
Well, Ose kind of served him in similar way, is it not?Yes, but it says she served him not as a slave like the others, but of her own will to gain what she wanted to get.
