I might only alter one part of the Curmudgeon's post, as I hold "Opinion" to have a far greater hold on mankind than does he I think:

perhaps better dogmatic zeal.

Best here is "intractably entrenched zeal."

That would be the difference between closed minds and open minds?
It is a physiological fact that our brain, while contributing roughly 2% on average to our bodily mass, hogs between 20 and 25% of the energy used by our bodies. Which leads me to the impression that all to many people may have gotten the concept of "energy conservation" wrong (among many other concepts ...).
