i was wondering about what the dwarves do during the quest to bring the ring to mount doom.
for instance, do the dwarves just defend erebor and wait for the enemy to come?
i am a bit confused.
The Dwarves start off by getting hounded three times by messengers of Sauron for info about Bilbo & his Ring as Gloin tells The Council of Elrond & that's all you hear except that they were attacked & Dain fell before their gates.
The story focuses on Frodo & the Ring & the Fellowship that sets out with him, not on events that take place in the lands surrounding The Hobbit.Tolkien, being ever the perfectionist, simply has to tie up every loose end historically, so he must inevitably tell us something about Erebor, The Elves of Mirkwood & Lorien. That's about all.
They actively participated in the Northern Theater.
On March 17, TA 3019, a vast army of Easterlings to attack the Mannishcity of Dale and the Dwarven stronghold of Erebor. The combined forces of Men and Dwarves fought them, but after three days of fighting they retreated towards Erebor. At the Gate of Erebor, a bitter battle ensued. King Dain II Ironfoot fell while defending the body of his ally, King Brand of Dale. However, the Dwarves and Men were able to withstand the siege and prevent the Easterlings from uniting with the Orcisharmies of Dol Guldur, sent by Sauron to assault Lothlorien and Mirkwood. Finally, on 27 March, King Thorin III Stonehelm and King Bard II drove the Easterlings out of Dale. Gandalf said about the Battle of Dale that, if the Dwarves and Men had not resisted, the forces of Mordor would have been able to flank Gondor and Rohan from the North and East, tipping the scales in favor of the Dark Lord.
King Naugladur.
