Tuor and Voronwe encounter Turin...
Even as he spoke thus, he heard a cry in the woods and they stood still as grey stones, listening. But the voice was a fair voice, though filled with grief, and it seemed that it called ever upon a name, as one that searches for another who is lost.
Then he went swiftyly away towards the North, as one in pursuit, or on an errand of great haste, and they heard him cry Faelivrin, Finduilas! until his voice died away in the woods. but they knew not that Nargothrond had fallen...

Do you think Voronwe could or should have easily assumed that Nargothrond had fallen?

I don't think that Voronwe recognised the name of Finduilas. I often think that Voronwe should have recognised the name of Finduilas since Turgon and his people aught to have made communications with people of Nargothrond whilst they dwelt in Neverest. I am not sure that he did recognise it

However If Voronwe recognised Finduilas' name then he should have realized that Nargothrond has fallen.
Then he went swiftyly away towards the North, as one in pursuit,

If Turin was in pursuit of Finduilas and going Northwards there was only one logical assumption; that is Finduilas has been captured by Orcs of Morgoth. And that could only happen if Nargothrond is completely and totally destroyed and ransaked, otherwise Orcs couldn't have had captured King's Daughter.

Exactly my own reasoning, Beleg.

We differ in one point though: I think Voronwe must have known Finduilas, daughter of Orodreth. I see little way around it.

Voronwe took his time getting down to Cirdan, and then he had to wait for the last ship to be built. Surely he had heard of the daughter of the King of Nargothrond?

But, if I assume Voronwe knew who Findiulas was, there is no explaination that I can find, for why he did not figure Nargothrond had fallen. As you have pointed out, the daughter of the King would not be taken unless the place was defeated. Now there could be a chance, in the mind of Voronwe, that Finduilas was captured away from Nargothrond. But, even if this entered his mind as a possability, it would have left open the other: that Nargothrond was gone.

He doesn't seem to suspect that at all though.

Since the Nirneath and Sacking of Fallas, things had gone really bad in the Western Beleriand. The teritory of Nargothrond wasn't very safe and I daresay Elves, and specially someone like Finduilas wouldn't wander far from Nargothrond. Moreover, before the coming of Turin, Nargothrond had almost made itself as hidden as Gondolin. I believe not many people from Nargothrond were allowed to go outside. So It would seem unlikely that the daughter of the King would be away in the wilds in such conditions.

Yes and besides that during his stay in Neverast he should also heard about him because this had to got be correspondence between Turgon and Finrod who were both great friends and in many ways of like mind.

But what reasons me to question the idea that Voronwe knew about Finduilas is the point that in the narrative Voronwe doesn't show any emotion when he hears the cry of Mormegil. IMO If he knew about her, given the cirumstances he would have understood the situation at once and would have showed some emotion, some excitement. But that is not present, and It seems as if either Voronwe doesn't know about Finduilas or doesn't care about her or the fate of Nargothrond one Iota.
And the second option, in all probability to me sounds Firvilous.

Maybe he did realise what had happened, since it seems prettey obvious that Finduilas wpould not have been taken unless Narfothrond had fallen, and he must have known Finduilas's name. I wouldn't say that he did not care about it, but that he knew that it was something that could not be helped, since Morgoth was going to take the whole of Beleriand and nothing could stop it. I think Voronwe knew this, and also realised that the only hope for ME was in bringingh Tuor to Gondolin, so that it would be no use to try and save Finduilas or to bother Tuor with it. Still it is strange that Tolkien says specifically that they didn't know about the fall of Nargothrond.

Perhaps Voronwe assumed the Finduilas for which this man called was some mortal woman?

Named after the elven princess of course, and minding he wouldn't have known much about the (naming) customs of motals, being from Gondolin and considering his history.

Maybe the best explanation is what Niniel offers - Voronwe did know! When JRRT says he did not, is it a mistake?

Maybe some new members will have different views from the ones already posted. :)
