Finduilas, named after the Elf-maiden of the First Age, was born in T.A. 2950 to the Prince of Dol Amroth, Adrahil II. This lady who belonged to the DĂşnedain heritage was well known for her beauty and warm heart.
Biography
Finduilas had two siblings, a sister named Ivriniel and a brother named Imrahil. She was married to a much older Denethor II, in TA 2976 of the Third Age. Denethor’s father, Ecthelion II, was the Steward of Gondor. Two years into their marriage, a boy named Boromir was born. Denethor loved him deeply. A second son, by the name Faramir, was born in TA 2983. Finduilas did her best in raising Faramir as his dad completely ignored him. Her life in Gondor was not appreciable. A year after Faramir’s birth, the death of Ecthelion fell upon the family, and Denethor had to fill in his father’s shoes as a steward. Nevertheless, Finduilas started to grow weak, and her health deteriorated. After four years of suffering, she breathed her last at the young age of thirty-eight. During her final years, she was always terrified by the Shadow of Mordor. She missed the seas dearly and kept gazing on the southern side of the city. [1] The men analogized her death as a withered seaward flower on a barren rock. In the later years, Faramir, whose mother’s sorrow had a lasting impression on him, gifted her robe to the grieving Éowyn.
Dúnedain Finduilas’s Legacy
Denethor, a pretty complicated man himself was deeply affected by his wife’s death and became more silent and grimmer. He was not interested in a remarriage. During Finduilas’s final years in the guarded city, he would foresee the assault of Mordor under his stewardship. The lonely Denethor would communicate with the Seeing Stones called the PalantĂr of Minas Tirith to soothe himself. On the contrary, this made him insane, and he committed suicide thirty years after his wife’s death. [2]
