I watched LOTR for sixth time and I saw something interesting. In the beginning when Galadriel speaks about the rings and the battle between elves, people and Sauron,Gil-Galad can be seen on two scenes. The first one which shows Cirdan,Galdriel and Gil-Galad watching the rings and the second one while he is killing orcs with his spear. These scenes are just a few part of the second.So.Gil-Galad is with black hair, but he is son of Fingolfin and nephew of Finarfin. It's said about Finarfin:
"...alone among the Noldorin princes he and his descendants had golden hair, derived from his mother Indis"
Why Gil-Galad is with black hair, not with golden. It was written somewhere that Finarfin was with black hair and that explains the color of his son's hair.Is it true?I'm not sure whether Gil-Galad was with black hair.
So the question is black hair or golden?

Black. I read it SOMEWHERE..... (Gee, someone's got plenty of time on there hands. Six times??? I've only had time to watch it four! I'll hafta do something bout that... *Note to self: Watch LOTR about ten more times*:D)

ILLOTRTM,
I'm going to watch it again and again.By the way in the DVD version it will be longer and the movie will include the moment when Galadriel gives presents to everyone of the fellowship.
Are u sure about Gil-Galad,because the meaning of Gil-Galad seems that Ereinion had golden hair...

Well, I'm 99.9%, there IS .1% that I could be wrong..... I'm so sure I read it, SOMEWHERE, probably in that atlas thing. It shows the thing where she gives the gifts? I'm glad! I wanted that part. Oh, time to go buy a DVD player....

The 'epesse' Gil-galad, means 'Star of Radiance' and refers not to his hair but to his helm, mail and shield which were overlaid with silver and set with a device of stars so that he 'shone from afar like a star'. JRRT never says what colour hair Gil-galad has. As a descendant of Fingolfin he would likely have had black hair. As a descendant of Finarfin he could have had golden hair, but when descded from Finarfin his mother was a Sinda, and the Sindar mostly had dark hair, so Gil-galad may have had dark hair then as well.

No offense, but why are you so curious about what color hair Gil-Galad had?

I know that Gil-Galad refers to Ereinion's appearence not his hair, but I was jsut wondering about him. It's easy to be find in the movie, just watch carefully the moment when the camera shows the three elves which have rings on their fingers. That's in the very beginnig of the movie. There're Galadriel,Cirdan(the old one)and the elf with black hair is Gil-Galad.The DVD version will be available probably after two or three months.I'm curious about Gil-Galad's hair cause I saw him in the movie and I asked myself whether Peter Jackson had presented him in the way which Tolkien describes my favourite elf.

interesting question but I have no clue. And as far as the movie, the first one is coming out in August and the second version in November (I think).

(this weeks 'necro-post' for Olorgandos Well-Known Member to comment about necro-posting on ;) )

I've always envisioned Gil-Galad as dark-haired as I did Legolas. I dont ave the exact quotes as to why I do, but it was a mental picture I had about them when I read about them.

Actually, when I joined TTF in August of last year, I quickly got the impression that such commenting was Squint-eyed Southerner's assumed role; anyway, I was the one digging out dusty old threads then, without even having to go to the archives and bothering Erestor Arcamen about reviving them. I'll gladly leave the chore to S-eS.
And my moniker is one that the site "decided" was appropriate, something like the stuff on A-U, so that would be an issue for the Mods. I know I can customize that thing in my account details; just can't be bothered. 😩

Hmm. According to Tolkien's last word Gil-galad was the son of Arothir son of Angrod, thus a member of the Finarfinians who are known for their golden hair. If Gil-galad's mother remained "a Sindarin lady of the North" (as is noted in one text, and already noted in this thread), well . . . but in any case, Gil-galad's sister Finduilas was golden-haired.

It's not the lineage in the constructed Silmarillion, but as I say, this is Tolkien's last known (to date) notion of Gil-galad's parentage.

Very off topic: by the way, anyone know how to change user names? A friend of mine is wondering.

I can't do it but if you message mazzly, he can certainly do so.

Of course, your friend should keep in mind that their username won't be changed in the existing discussions, which may lead to some confusion. To give a purely random hypothetical example, if, say, someone in an older thread has said "Galin makes an excellent point, which leads me to consider. . ." people are going to wonder who this "Galin" person is, making all these great observations. :)

I think a mod has to do it. But check with Erestor.

Sorry, I just can't resist, sometimes I just can't control the Monty Python part of my personality 🤪
Is this friend named Endorfin?
*ducks*

Hmm. If this friend doesn't have PM I guess it doesn't matter . . . unless there are powers here beyond his ken.

But to say something on topic: Gil-galad!

🐾

Endorfin - Ereinion (Gil-galad)

- both names are eight letters long
- both start with E
- both end with N
- both have two Ns in them
- both have one O in them
- both have one R in them
- both have at least one I in them

This can not be a coincidence! Have the proper authorities been informed?!? 👮‍♂️
