im just about done with FoTR, and im pretty pleased so far. there's a BUNCH of stuff i dont quite get, but thats ok. One thing, though, is that pesky ring. This, ALL POWERFUL ring. i want to know the specifics. other than disappearing, which i dont think could let you rule the world, what does it do? does Sauron magicaly get a huge army? a big sword? what? the good, wise folks that know a lot about the ring sure dont tell the specifics, know what i mean?

A strong willled person using the ring would be able to see into the minds and hearts of the possessors of the three elven rings (If you haven't read it, I won't tell you who they are. It spoils surprises. You find out at the end of the Return of the King). Also you have control of the Nine, the Nazgul.
There are other things which I am not qualified to discuss. There are a lot of threads on this subject.
Glad to help on your first question.
Love,
Elgee

ooo. so much secrecy. im going to go read right now. i cant take the suspense!

The problem is, as Gandalf stated early on, that Sauron imparted a large measure of his own power into the One Ring, so it's not so much that it is "all powerful" as it is that once possessed of it HE will be FULLY POWERED, and so long as he does not have it he is susceptible to being weakened by holding dominion over lesser creatures.

Yup

And because Sauron imbued the Ring with a large part of his malignancy and magical energy (he is a Maia, which is a sort of god), the Ring can only be used for evil. Even if the intention is good at the beginning the evil lurking inside the Ring (an object of lust) will corrupt the mind and turn good to evil.
And the Ring only gives power according to the stature of the wielder, which is why Gandalf would be a lot scarier with the Ring than Gollum.

The reason Sauron made the Ring was to control every other Ring. (did you read the short poem on the first page of the book? There were a lot of Rings made in the Second Age, which gave power to their wielders: three Elves, seven Dwarves, nine Men. So the Ring gave Sauron two things: it gave him a power over the minds of others, and allowed him to control the other Rings, and the works people would do with the other Rings.

Which basically sums it all up. So all is left for me to say is: Welcome to the Forum wdixon!:D

Oh yeah, NOW you pretend to be friendly...oh wait ...Um...HI wdixon!! *wave wave* Welcome to Fantasy Island....
