Second-guessing and Misunderstanding Tolkien

[Squint-eyed Southerner]

I want a movie!

But not by you-know-who. 😉

I nominate Guillermo del Toro.

Why is J.R. R. Tolkien so overrated and Lord Dunsany (father of modern fantasy) isn't while it's a well known fact that Tolkien got influenced by Lord Dunsany (among other authors) for the Lord of the Rings?

Average person reading Lord Dunsany:

[Squint-eyed Southerner]

Hey -- I like Dunsany!

[Radaghast]

Hey -- I like Dunsany!

Sorry 😇

[Radaghast]

If one does not simply walk into Mordor, how did two Hobbits and a Gollum manage to stroll right in?

Why don't you take a long stroll on a short pier?

[Radaghast]

Hey -- I like Dunsany!

Just out of curiosity, what would you consider your favorites by him? I tried reading The King of Elf-land's Daughter, just kind of tailed off and just didn't bother to take it up again.

[Squint-eyed Southerner]

That one, and some others -- but you're asking for a deep dredge through the memory bank. 😳 It's been a long time.

Brief discussion in the Books thread here, BTW:

How did Sam manage to defeat Shelob so easily? Surely a creature as old and wise as her wouldn't be so foolish?

Sorry... I'm just bored... 🫤

[Radaghast]

Why didn't Gandalf sit in an ivory tower like Winston Churchill saying inspiring things, instead of facing the Witch-king alone and heroic stuff that risked everything?

[Radaghast]

[Radaghast]

Could the other Nazgûl have been destroyed in a similar way to how the witch king was? My feeling was always, yes but it would have required a magical blade or powerful wizardry such as that possessed by Gandalf.

😕 My feeling is you really ought to read or re-read the book. Crikey 😖

[Radaghast]

Why are magic systems in D&D and Lord of the Rings so different?

There's a magic system in The Lord of the Rings? 🫤

[Radaghast]

Who is greatest, most legendary and most prominent character of Legendarium? Morgoth or Manwe or Tulkas or Feanor or Fingolfin or Eönwe or Fingon or Turin or Hurin or Earendil or Glorfindel or Ecthelion or Sauron or Gothmog or Osse or Aragorn?

[Squint-eyed Southerner]

I'm reminded of this guy:

[Erestor Arcamen]

Could Gandalf Have Been King Bladorthin?

[Radaghast]

Will the troll go back to the mines of Moria?

Yeah. He's a homing troll 😵‍💫

[Erestor Arcamen]

Once in a while he'll have a decent article but then he has gems like that. Those kinds of questions, to me, wouldn't be worth the time to answer. He was also a member here at one point but got banned for I think being disrespectful to others.

I think I've run across some articles. Not sure I've read any through, though.

Was it true that Fëanor from The Silmarillion was a "lisper" (as in, preferring the use of "th" instead of "s")? Would he have said "Thilmarilli" instead of "Silmarilli," or "Thauron" instead of "Sauron"?
