🐴 The Lord of the Rings: The ⚔️War of the Rohirrim

Wow, some actual War of the Rohirrim news in the War of the Rohirrim news thread! Amazing! A Miracle!

Love the images! It's what Bakshi was hoping for with his project 45 years ago. Too bad too bad Peter Jackson has co-opted J.R.R. Tolkien to such a point that the perception is he has to be involved in any Middle Earth adaptation for it to be 'any good'. I knew that was going to happen back in '01. Oh well, hoping War of the Rohirrim is good despite his involvement. Looking forward to it.

I mean, it is to be expected, in another thread on here someone mentioned the media treating him returning as the Second Coming of Christ. It is rather unfortunate, yes.

or are we going to have the second movie of Brave instead of Tolkien?
Hehe, could be! 😂 I had thought this movie was going to focus mostly on Helm Hammerhand himself in the conflict, but apparently his daughter will be the lead role instead.

Regardless, I am still currently looking forward to this movie for what it is, with the animation, time period and events, etc. I’m curious to see how it will turn out.

As am I. I actually don't mind if she's the lead role if they don't make her out to be another RoP Galadriel, or another Eowyn, as much as I love Eowyn. I want something new and closely following the lore.
Agreed. I’m not against her in general. She could be quite a pleasant and endearing character to root for as the lead, for all I know. I’m just concerned because much of Hollywood nowadays makes their female characters so overpowering and dominant, for the sake of “strong, powerful women.” Please no. Not here.

Tolkien did a wonderful job writing his female characters to be strong and yet feminine, not as if they were trying to be men like most media would portray nowadays. If this movie can capture the female essence properly in the spirit of what Tolkien intended without making her too modern, I will be pleased indeed.

On a side note, the pictures do look great, though!

Is the Helm's daughter role big enough for her to be a protagonist
She isn't even named in the Appendices. The only thing we know about her is that Freca wanted her to be married to his son Wulf. But Helm didn't like that idea, so he killed Freca. After that she isn't mentioned again.

Well, I hope they at least stick close to the lore, even if she's just a nameless girl. It could be the story told from her pov.🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, she's not a nameless girl, at least in the movie.

As you know, Tolkien, as a philologist, attached great importance to names, and this gives you an idea of how serious the producers are about staying true to the books.

The Rohirrim all have Anglo-Saxon / Old English names.
"Hera" is the name of the female protagonist in the movie. That sounds like Greek mythology to me. Hera was the wife of the god Zeus.

The only excuse I can find is an old Germanic dictionary, where "*hēra-" roughly means "hair":
(see "Haar")

It looks to me as if a "contemporary" feminism component is being incorporated here.
And that no effort is being made to understand Tolkien's naming conventions and implement them accordingly.

Edit:
I'd take that back, if they actually derived it from that:
Old English hær "hair, a hair," from Proto-Germanic *hēran (source also of Old Saxon, Old Norse, Old High German har, Old Frisian her, Dutch and German haar "hair"), perhaps from PIE *ghers- "to stand out, to bristle, rise to a point"
But I don't think people in the movie business give it that much thought.
Well, maybe the producers will read my post and then claim that they've always meant it that way... 😁

However, I find the 3 images published so far quite acceptable. I remain curious and hope that a trailer will be released soon.

'Hera' is an Old English word which means vassal, or follower.

That is such a perfect spot within the Lore to develop one's own story and not directly getting into conflict with the canon. You can develop a somewhat 'average' female lead, that isn't as powerful a being like Galadriel would be, avoiding the kind of obnoxiously 'powerful' characters @Fingon_Findekáno described, and tell the story from her perspective, graciously ignoring the lack of female leads in Middle-Earth. The Setting of the Story is relatable for 'normal' movie goers that don't lurk around online Fantasy Forums since names like Helm, Rohan and Dunlendings are all familiar due to their mentioning in the PJ Adaptations. And Helms Story, even though well known, doesn't go into too much detail, so that it acts more like a framework than the real content of the movie itself, leaving a lot of room for creativity. This, paired with an animation style that guarantees the movie's aesthetics to detach at least somewhat from the creative vision of Peter Jackson, gives me really high hopes for an excellent Tolkien Adaptation I haven't seen for years but always wished for.

↑ This person gets it ↑ Personally I'll go see this and enjoy it for what it is, like I did the Bakshi project, the PJ projects, and RoP projects.

Screenplay for all the 'lets stick to the lore' folk. Named dude wants to marry unnamed girl. Named father don't like named dude wanting to marry his unnamed daughter so he kills him. The end. Yeah, let's make a movie of that.

Seriously people. There has to be some creative license taken here to fill in the blanks Tolkien left. The nit-picking about the origins of names and such is a really deep level of anality really. I like seeing everyone's "take" on it and their "opinions" that really show what the writers of said opinions are all about. Love it! 🤣

Hey, I’m not against the movie. I’m actually quite looking forward to it as well, and I do plan to go see it when it comes to theaters this December. I’m excited to see another LOTR movie being done, exploring this significant time period in Rohan’s history, and I’m confident this style of anime will lend itself beautifully to Middle-Earth. As the premier date draws closer later this year, I will be counting down the days!

Very well said, my friend.

For me personally, I was really looking forward to RoP, but the quality really sucked, other than it being unfaithful to the lore. Awful casting, lame main characters and dialogues and everything. The story had no consistency with its own lore, let alone Tolkien. PJ movies aren't faithful either, but I love them all because they had what RoP lacked in many places. I'm looking forward to this one too, just to see if there's any hope of ever seeing the Silm as an animation one day.
