Burb, you probably remember the scence in FoTR where
Frodo throws
the ring in the fire and upon removing it, sees characters written on it in an ancient language. It is the language of
Mordor.
Gandalf translates the verse into the common tongues as:
One ring to rule them all
One ring to find them
One ring to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them
Three rings for the eleven king under the sky
Seven for the
dwarf lords in their
halls of stone
Nine for mortal
men doomed to die
One for the
Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the land of Mordor where
the shadows lie
One ring to rule them all
One ring to find them
One ring to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie
You can listen to
Tolkien's own voice reading this famous verse by following this link:
Tolkien reading the verse
The powers of the others rings is diminished or elimated when
the One Ring is destroyed, though they still physically exist. This is illustrated by the three
ring-bearers of the Elven rings who display there rings when the leave
the Grey Havens on the way to the West.
