I met John Noble once, and he said that the tomato was an ad-libbed accident; they just dumped a lot of food in front of him and said "eat this, interestingly."

I didn't even ask him about the tomato. I hadn't yet seen LOTR at this point. I guess I'm just a natural listener and this whole thing must be weighing on his mind.
