Some more interviews of Rick Beato's on YouTube. He's done 100 by now since 2016, apparently. There's one item that shows them in order of their views- with a "play all" option, which should be good for over a week's non-stop viewing!!! 😵‍💫

It was canceled. My impression is it was too realistic -- and therefore too painful for a lot of people.

Yeah I knew going into it that it was canceled. I thought that they handled ending it really gracefully despite that.

And that is interesting, as that is what I liked so much about. I don't know if it just that I have experienced so much sorrow in my life, and have become accustomed to wanting to confront it directly that I liked it so much, but I thought that was definitely it's biggest asset. One character (Kim) is really horrible to Lindsay for the first few episodes, but it then shows how abusive and traumatic her household situation is, so even the characters doing things we don't like had reasons to do so and complex motivations. But perhaps most people are fairly pain/sorrow-averse.

Furthermore, it was also canceled because NBC kept changing their timeslot and putting episodes out irregularly so they had a really hard time building a fanbase. Anyone I have talked to about it only have good things to say, even as far as the painful experiences in the show go.

That is always the death knell for a TV series. FX did that to 'Over There' in 2004. With that show, the subject matter was likely too close to the actual events happening. But FX would pre-empt shows at the last minute, move time slots, move days, etc... and that was over the course of one season of 13 episodes. Te first six were solid with reasonable ratings, it some exec at FX decided to put a fork in it then and started messing with timeslots. The producers say as much in the extra clip on the last DVD.

What we are watching is The Punisher.

In my meanderings through Rick Beato stuff on YouTube, I'd noticed one rather short - a bit over 10 minutes - item where Beato comments on a 1979 interview by Dick Cavett with Jazz piano legend Oscar Peterson. I was familiar with Cavett from my family's stay in the US, so after listening to Beat's clip I entered "Dick Cavett" in the YT search bar.

Oh dear! Serious Rabbit Hole!!! 😵‍💫

So far I've watched interviews with John Cleese (1979), Bob Hope (1972) and Grouch Marx (1969).
Cavett interviewed tons of people. A very short, very incomplete list just from the first few pages:
Louis Armstrong, Jimi Hendrix, Salvador Dali, Alfred Hitchcock, Eddie Murphy, Robert Shaw, Janis Joplin, Paul Simon, Mel Brooks, Marlon Brando, Miles Davis, Orson Welles, John Lennon, George Harrison & Ravi Shankar, Katherine Hepburn, Laurence Olivier, Mae West, Jerry Lewis, Woody Allen ... 🐰🐰🐰

Cavett was one of the most literate, articulate, and insightful interviewers on US TV. Always had interesting people.

Similar to Fresh Air on NPR, though that would come under "What are You Listening to?", rather than watching. Good one yesterday, for anyone interested in kaju (if you include King Kong under that rubric):

Briton David Frost was definitely in the same category. There must have been the odd other interviewer that I've forgotten.
Carson, Letterman, Leno, O'Brien and their successors with their late-night shows were / are a different category.

Dick Cavett interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

On September 11 1971 ...

Another "Listening" post:

I confess to not having read anything by Leigh Bardugo, or seeing the "Shadow and Bone" series, but I found this conversation on her new book, and on her methods of research and world-building, quite interesting:

Miracles, mystery, and magic in Leigh Bardugo's 'The Familiar'

Unlike most of Bardugo’s books, “The Familiar” is aimed at adults.

Just as an update, Hundreds of Beavers was hilarious and an excellent movie. Highly recommended for any comedy/slapstick fans.

Just finished seasons 1 and 2 of Legend of Vox Machina. Being a longtime D&D fan, this show was incredible. I would highly recommend it!

Just watched the Wes Andersen movie Rushmore. Very interesting, but Life Aquatic is still my favorite.

The Dick Cavett show is great. I love the interview he did of Crosby, Stills and Nash where David Crosby tells everyone to stop supporting the oil/petroleum companies and then Dick Cavett mentions that one of said companies is a sponsor for the show hahaha.

I frequently watch movies with my brother, and yesterday we watched The Three Amigos. Very funny!

I'm enjoying my rewatch of the Northern Exposure series.

Last night's episode included a trebuchet and a big fling.
