I watched two films on TV recently - one I had seen before and one I hadn't. Well maybe it's the comfort of the familiar but I gave up on
Batman vs Superman (or is it vice versa? I don't care). Where were all these special effects going I asked myself. Do I care about these characters? Answer: no!
The other was
Once Upon a Time in the West. Incredibly this film flopped in the US on first release. Oh Americans you were so wrong. Of course, this wasn't true of all Americans and
Vertigo flopped as well more generally. Why is the Leone film so good - let me count the ways. There are too many ways for a post so let's focus on a few
One big reason this film is so good is
Charles Bronson. He is a much better choice than Clint Eastwood. He has that world weary manner and lived in face plus natural toughness and integrity that just fits this role so well. His delivery of the key line "an ancient
race" is not something Eastwood could have done as well.
Secondly the Morricone score is better imho than the Dollars trilogy, especially the final shoot out.
Thirdly the tension in the long build up to the final shoot out.
Fourthly the courage in having
Henry Fonda play the baddie.
Fifthly - the number of subtle references to other great westerns. Leone is paying homage to this tradition.
Robards is excellent but I can't quite say the same about Cardinale - sorry Claudia!
And last but not least that opening sequence and giving
Jack Elam a proper role beyond town drunk which he so richly deserved. It seems the famous fly was tied to a string - best ever supporting insect.
