Is that about Garibaldi, or Star Trek? 🤔

Neither Premise summary:

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just graduated from the Universal Union's space academy and assigned to the Intrepid, a starship on an intergalactic mission to explore new worlds. He quickly discovers that there's a problem with this ship: On every away mission, at least one ensign dies a horrible death when senior officers do not. The question is why? The answer may surprise you....

It's very clever and funny, both a homage to such series and poking fun at the cliches in them.

And the ensign is always a security officer. Security officers are a dime-a-dozen in action stories.
Lose a few, there are more waiting in the wings....(Guy Fleegman /"Roc Ingersol" knows all about that 😉)

Not in this case. Astrobiologists, security officers, geologists, all take it for the team. One member of the senior team always gets something too, but miraculously survives. Beyond that.... As River Song would say, "spoilers"

Wikipedia doesn't have an entry under "Expendable(s)" for a book.
Not to be wondered, perhaps, considering the ensemble casts of the first two films that I have on DVD.

1) Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Steve Austin ...
2) Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger ...

I'd guess that transferring the rapid-fire bombardment of visual and sound effects does not readily translate into descriptive writing ... 🤔

My post is screen cap of the title of the 1945 movie directed by John Ford
They Were Expendable (Wikipedia)
Same (IMDB trailer)
Yes, I know it's a movie and not a book....it was just the common concept of the expendability of military personnel whether tongue-in-cheek as Ugluk describes the book he is reading, or is a straight dramatic movie.

(If mixing genres in a comment is not permitted, just tell me that and I'll forego doing it. )

I've seen that film (most likely on TV) - which was based on a book, as per Wikipedia. I immediate thought of PT boats when you mentioned it being a film, which turned out to be correct.

You'd have to ask the mods, but I seriously doubt it.
The genres keep getting mixed - therefore the existence of TTF, being the classical book-to-film route.
More recent seems to be the novelization of films - I'd guess primarily franchises (every producer's dream). Has novelization of TV series also occurred? I'm totally ignorant of this segment of the book market.

Babylon 5, Star Trek, Dr Who, have all had novelisations of them. Many other series no doubt also

Finished my last book and am reading the Silo series by Hugh Howey now since the first season of the show was absolutely amazing.

Ah, if only! My friends claim it is 'too daunting' and 'maybe someday'... If they only knew what they were missing out on...

Having made it through the (65-page 🤯) introduction, I'm finally working my way into the Volsunga Saga, in the William Morris version. I've read about the cursing of the Ring, the hero has used the reforged Sword-that-was-Broken to slay the dragon, and met the Shieldmaiden. More adventures to come . . .

Have you read the 2009 "The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun" by JRRT ed. CRT? If yes, perhaps you could give a synopsis of the similarities and the differences between the Morris and JRRT versions.

What 📔book are you reading right now?
