The absence of Glorfindel, and Rivendell generally, in the later part of the story, amounts to a lacuna in the tale. 1st Vermont's idea is a good one -- Glorfindel would have been a liability in the Fellowship's mission, but a powerful Noldor lord would have been a definite plus in the war, especially against the Nazgul.

Any attempt at explanation is speculation. Here's one: Elrond anticipated an attack on Rivendell, so held back most of the Elves.

Or, he might have thought having a strong power center in the North would constitute an implicit, or potential threat to Sauron's forces.

All speculation. 😀

In the Quest of Erebor Gandalf states that he is sure that Sauron's original plan was to attack Lorien and Rivendell . . . he then adds that when one thinks of the Pelennor, " . . . do not forget the battle of Dale. Think of what might have been. Dragon fire and savage swords in Eriador! There might be no Queen in Gondor. We might now only hope to return from the victory here to ruin and ash."

Of course Gandalf is including Smaug in this "what if scenario", but still.

Perhaps Durin’s Bane, too. While Sauron’s regular forces could not easily enter Lórien because of Galadriel’s power (probably a reflection of Melian’s Girdle that shielded Doriath), the Balrog probably could. Hence Celeborn’s outburst when he first met the survivors of the Company of the Ring upon their escape from Moria.
