Mallorn was a large deciduous tree with golden leaves and silver trunks that grew in Middle Earth's lands.
Description
Mellyrn (plural) were tall, giant trees that resembled beech trees. They had barks that were smooth and colored silver-grey. The leaves were longer with a green color on top and silver beneath. The leaves turned golden during the autumn season, and the forests became vividly colorful. The leaves fell only in the spring. The trunks were divided into many branches, leaving enough space to build a telain on top. The leaves were used for packing while the bark produced hithlain. Mallorn trees were originally found in Tol Eressëa and Valinor. The Mallorn trees were imported by the Elves of Tol Eressëa to Middle Earth to spread their culture. The Men of Númenor grew these trees around the Bay of Eldanna. The trees were considered so precious that the great Ship-King, Tar-Aldarion, didn't ever knock them down. Some Mallorn nuts were given as a reward to the Numenors for their courageous act in the War of Wrath. Tar-Aldarion, the Ship-King of Númenor, gifted a few nuts to his friend Noldorin King Gil-galad of Lindon. The Mellyrn were not planted in Lindon, instead transported to Lothlorien by Galadriel. They flourished in the lands beside River Anduin and grew to great heights guarded by her, and hence the place was called the Golden Wood. However, these Lothlorien trees were not of the same size or girth as that of Númenor. The Mallorn trees were so immense that flets could be built on top of several adjoining roofs. The Fellowship spent their first night in Lothlorien in such flats built on the trees growing on the North-Eastern edge of Lothlorien, close to the tributary of river Silverlode.
The flets were constructed with thin, woven, and movable walls to avoid the wind. These flets were used as a defensive site by the garrisons to fight against their enemies. Galadriel andCeleborn built a city called Caras Galadhon on top of enormous Mallorn trees in Lothlorien. The city was equipped with a massive hall on the tallest tree's large horizontal branches at the center of the thicket. [1] The Mallorn leaves were used to wrap lembas, a type of Elvish waybread given to the Fellowship. This helped the waybread stay fresh longer and served as a meal for people living there in scarcity times. Frodo Baggins stated that the tree in Lothlorien was full of life when he touched one. A casket filled with soil and a Mallorn nut from Galdriel's Mallorn garden was gifted to Samwise Gamgee of the Shire. Sam sowed the nut in the same place where the Party Tree was, after the War of the Ring. This nut later grew into a massive Mallorn tree and was called the new Party tree. This was the only Mallorn tree found west of the Mountains and east of the Sea. Whenever the tree blossomed, it became the finest in the world. At times it became a pilgrimage center. This new Party tree of Shire became a symbol of blessing and thanks for Frodo, Samwise, Meriadoc, and Peregrin's brave efforts in their struggle against Sauron and Saruman. It also represented the benevolence and good qualities of the Hobbits and their close association with their lands. [2]
