Nori was a dwarf, one of Durin’s folk who lived in the Blue Mountains with Thorin when he settled there. He was also one of the thirteen members in Thorin’s Company who had traveled to Erebor to fight the dragon Smaug. When Smaug was dead, Nori took his portion of the wealth and lived in the Lonely Mountain. Nori played the flute, wore a purple hood, and was fond of heavy meals like his friend Bilbo Baggins.

Early Life

Not much is known about the parents and origins of Nori. He was, however, related to Thorin and a member of the House of Durin. He had two brothers – Ori and Dori. Both Dori and Nori carried and played flutes. His year of birth is not known, but according to the description of the Quest of Erebor, as made by Bilbo Baggins, Fili and Kili were the youngest of the 13 members and young by about fifty years. Moreover, when Thorin was captured, Balin was the eldest of those left. Balin was born in 2763, and Fili was born in 2859 of the Third Age. This means Nori would have been born between 2809 and 2763 in the Third Age. He was anywhere between 132 and 178 years of age when he went to the Quest for the Lonely Mountain. The two brothers also agreed with Bilbo’s belief that meals should be frequent and grand. Before the adventure for the Lonely Mountain, Nori lived in the Blue Mountains with his family.

The Quest of Erebor

In the Third Age 2941, Nori, along with his two brothers, joined Thorin's Company, became friends with Bilbo Baggins, and traveled with him in search of Smaug in the Lonely Mountain. He was a member of the fourth group of five Dwarves to reach Bag End. Nori had played the flute when Thorin asked for music. Nori and Ori were the last of the Dwarves to show up when Gandalf told the tale of the adventures to Beorn. When they experienced trouble in Goblin-town as the Orcs and Wargs pursued them, Nori realized that Bilbo had been left behind. They had climbed the tree, and he asked his brother Dori to save Bilbo. Nori did not do much to stand apart during the Dwarves' adventures and shared his experiences as other members of the Company. He said they were attacked by Trolls, Elves, Spiders, and Goblins and reached the Lonely Mountain. After that, he remained under the Mountain, and reports say he was still there during the War of the Ring. [1] Nori participated in the Battle of the Five Armies and survived it. He returned to the Lonely Mountain, settled there, and became wealthy. [2] He perhaps fought in the Battle of Dale.

Etymology

Nori was the name of a dwarf in an old poem. The meaning of the name is ''little scrap''.

Adaptations

Movies

In the 1966 film ''The Hobbit'', the character of Nori is not shown. Thorin travels with the princess of Dale and a guard. In ''The Hobbit'' of 1977, Nori is voiced by Jack DeLeon. However, he rarely speaks like the other Dwarves. In the series 2012-14, the character is played by Jed Brophy. According to a description by the studio, Nori was the most elusive member of Thorin's Company and was occasionally in trouble with the authorities of the dwarves. He joins the Quest for the Lonely Mountain without knowing that he will be in a worse situation.

Radio

Antony Viccars played Nori in the 1968 radio series ''The Hobbit''.

Video Games

  • In ''The Hobbit' video games, the character of Nori does not exist. Bilbo Baggins is accompanied only by Thorin.
  • The 2018 game ''The Lord of the Rings Online'' has a portrayal of Nori. He is seen at the Gatehouse of the Lonely Mountain giving a description of the Siege of Erebor along with his brother Dori. He is later seen at many other places in Erebor. Believing that huge wealth could be found in the Ered Mithrin, Nori sets out on an expedition ''The Steel Keep'' to reclaim the wealth. Dori makes a group of dwarves rescue Nori from enemies.
