First Grug create three shiny rocks.
Second Grug take three shiny rocks.
First Grug tries to take back the rocks. Ouchie.
Little Gurgs keep trying to take back the rocks. Little Grugs fight. Big ouchie.
Bad Grug nearly wins but Big Grugs beat him. World massive ouchie.
Grugs lived in war ever after.

In sum: many Grugs, many bad decisions.

First time i sat down to read it in my young 20s. I had hard time getting it too.
Strategy is
1: Learn the name of each valar
2: Remember each role of the valar
3: After that its easy.

My strategy was to look at lots and lots of fanart while I read. That made it pretty clear in my mind who is who!
