I mentioned in my intro thread wanting to share my art, so here it is! The images might be a bit crunchy since I'm not the best with a camera, so bear with me 😊

These are some little Beren and Luthien scenes I did. I really like doodling foliage!

Luthien portrait doodles

This is a page in my sketchbook where I was trying to design a book design for legolas, focusing more on the lore than the movies do--as well as building on my own headcanons. (Also yes, he's eating lembas)

A Maglor portrait I did this morning: (His hair is really fun to draw lol)

A simple doodles of Maglor and Maedhros hanging out:

I have a few more drawings, but I haven't taken pictures of them yet so I might add them later!

I'm finally back with more of my sketchbook stuff! I haven't been able to sketch as much lately, so a lot of this is little stuff drawn over a period long period of time 😅

Some of it's a bit old, and maybe not my best work but I'd still like to share it with you all!

First up are some loose doodles I did of Maglor, I had sat down to do some more serious drawing studies, but I got bored and just ended up drawing my favorite character lol

I quite like this one though it's not perfect. I tend to think of the clothing worn in Valinor as something similar to ancient Greece (simply because Valinor and Olympus are very similar concepts to me), thus the toga/chitton like outfit. The basket is just the harvest aesthitic of this season wearing off on me lol

This one is a bit rougher . . . I always struggle with sitting poses. Here Kano is looking after Amrod and Amras.
S1.jpg

This last one in this batch, Kano playing his harp. I think he'd wear this nicer outfit to a party, or something.
s8.jpg

More assorted Maglor doodles from my other book that I put more effort in, but aren't necessarily better.
s5.jpg

(Yes I covered his face on the right with a sticker . . . it looked bad lol)
s7.jpg

Finally, there is this Beren and Luthien drawing a did quite a while ago, but never photographed. It's kind of wonky, but I'm still proud of the colors.

A different photo composition that focuses on the characters:

That's all I have for now. I have a ton of ideas and sometimes all I want to do is draw my favorite characters, but unfortunately I'm more busy then ever.

Until next time, when I have something else to show!

Your work is beautiful and your natural talent is very evident.

Clearly you have worked hard to still better your craft and it clearly shows in your artwork. Don’t worry about the sitting poses, we all struggle a little with something like this in one way or another. Have you ever sketched from life models? Your ability to tell a story and the emotion/depth you display in your drawings are superb.

Congratulations and thank you for sharing. The Beren and Luthien was my favourite.

Thank you both for the kind words!
I like all the various Maglors. Some are very nicely drawn, while others are funny (like the 'Nelyo's POV' one 😂). Baby Amrod and Amras are very cute.

Also that Beren and Lúthien scene is very cool. I don't think I've seen any drawings of the moment where Beren takes a Silmaril from the crown before. 🤔
Now that you say it, neither have I. I think I decided to draw it because I wanted to to do a full scene and background, but was nervous about portraying a fight or a battle because of the added complexity. This seemed like a simple option, where all the characters are sitting or standing in fairly easy poses, and the background can just be a basic cave-like hall.

Looking back, some of my old thumbnails from the time included a more dynamic and illustrative idea of Luthien tricking Morgoth. I might still do that one if I ever run out of ideas, I remember being proud of the composition, but for some reason I decided to do this other one instead.

It depends on your definition of 'life models.' I have painted still-lives of plaster statues, which my art teacher keeps on hand because it's easier if you want to have a face to reference that isn't a photo. As for an actual living model, I have done model drawings based on photograph libraries that are set up for artists to use in a way that mimics a in-person life-drawing session. I haven't ever been to a real, in-person session though, which is likely what you mean. Where I live that is mostly reserved for college level education, and seeing as I'm still in the last stretches of high school I haven't ever really had the chance. I'm sure there are other organizations in my community that hold them too, but I'm not involved enough to know who and when 😅, I'm a bit of a hermit outside of school.

I do think a life-drawing session would be interesting to attend, if I ever get the chance. The practice it provides can be extremely useful for learning.

In art “life models” has only one definition, and they pose for artists to study the human figure/anatomy to help them sketch them more accurately. These sessions are invaluable, just as sketching from nature or still etc.

I wish you all the best and good luck with your artistic progression.

I somewhat disagree, I've heard it used for several things and it becomes hard to define what 'counts' or not when it comes to digital resources (like the photograph library's I mentioned before), but I digress. I did think that that's what you were referring to.

Thank you!!

At this point, low quality pictures is part of the vibe of my art 😅, I can never seem to get around to taking photos when the ligthing is good . . . Just a few doodles this time:

A more illustrative thing of Maglor and Elrond (Maglor being the silhouette):
Finished mags and elrond.jpg

I saw a really nice piece that gave my boy more wavy hair, and I wanted to try it out:
(ignore the random rear horse end lol)
Magiiii.jpg

I like how it looks, but his hair is still straight in my head, so I'll probably stick with that. (Also yes, I know he's technically holding a lyre, not a harp, but it is what it is).

A very silly doodle of Maglor and Bilbo, based off a fun headcanon some friends and I came up with, that they would be good friends in Rivendell.

A younger Nelyo doodle--I do draw other characters besides Maglor, believe it or not🤣
(This is where my poor photo quality truly shines)

Not the most polished stuff in the world, but I had fun doing it hehe

Yay, that was sort of my intention! I wanted to try to convey how ambiguous of a character he is, especially with his role in Elrond's life.
Oh yeah, I totally picked up on that. It definitely gave the vibe of "This guy has murdered lots of people and has a dark soul, but he really loves this kid... also he may or may not have kidnapped this kid." And maybe even his attachment to Elrond comes off as slightly messed up or sinister too.

Exactly! I included both the sword and the harp to try and reflect those two sides of him. That, and I added the detail of Elrond looking away while he hugs him to make it seem like he's ashamed or nervous about wanting to be with Maglor.

Just a singular colored pencil thing of Maedhros I did today, because I got the pencils for Christmas:

It's a little wonky in places, but I'm happy with it. I've used the specific kind of pencils before for my art class, and I wanted to test out how they would work in my sketchbook, as well as how they would work with character drawing as I had only done landscapes with them previously. It was a good practice, and I think it'll definitely make working on more intentional pieces easier.
Here is the reference I used, by the way:

I don't know who the photographer or model is, but I've seen images from this photoshoot on Pinterest often. Of course the red hair reminded me of Maedhros, and I liked the pose, so I decided to draw it. I kind of wish I had captured the expression on the girls face in Nelyo a little better, but I got tired and rushed finishing it up 😅

I really like the colours, and the textures produced by the pencil lines.

I really like the colors, and his face! It looks a lot like how I imagine it.

I actually like your expression better. He looks weary and haunted, which is very fitting for his character.

Thank you! It's one of the reasons I really like colored pencils. With painting, you often have to be very intentional with your strokes to get a nice texture, but with colored pencils it's almost automatic.

I'm glad! I was a little worried he'd come out too feminine, because I was using a reference of a girl, but I think it turned out alright.

Really? I was thinking that her expression was a little clearer, more 'disappointed' looking. I feel like I tend to lean towards blank-er expressions because it makes drawing the face easier, and I'm trying to get away from that. I think I could've pushed it a little farther, that's all.
