Yes, sorry, I usually don't 'go there'... have just been battling the Machine on many fronts of late. Its stranglehold is very tight, and the cattle hard to stir up into a stampede.

A decent rebellion now and then is not a bad thing. Especially as real 'rebellion' is against tyranny. And those with the 'divine spark' are indeed to withstand tyranny in all its forms. Yet even there, a great somnambulance has set in.

Indeed! Well if this community is any proof, I would say the hope lies in us as are willing to stand up and stay "awake" if you will.

As an attempt to return to the original thread topic: My wife and I had some friends over this past weekend. They have not read the books, but are both fans of the PJ movies (as you all know, I have no qualms with that). They are also however, fans of..... dare I say... Rings of Power. I was trying to explain to them how ROP is essentially very overbudgeted, poorly written fanfic. Honestly less than that even, as the fanfics you folks have all come up with are miles and miles ahead of ROP. They continued to disagree with my take, even going so far as to say that it didn't really matter to them if it stayed remotely true to the Professor's creations.

I didn't want to a continue arguing all day, so I stated that I truly believe it would have been a permissible show if it had been an original work within an original universe, and that Amazon only bought the rights to get the Tolkien name associated with their cash cow. They didn't seem to have much defense against that, so I would like to say I did my part lol

I don't mind if folks like RoP either.
Without a comparative, they simply look at the food on the plate and decide if they feel like sticking their spoon in.

If we boil RoP down to its plain cinematography, backgrounds, costuming, etc. (though in all catagories we can think of there are 'oopses'...) it's not all that bad for some. Especially if they don't even use other cinematographic examples as comparatives, or haven't learned how to do so yet.

Speaking of which, I just saw a Reddit question asking if any members of Thorin's company ever visited Bilbo after the Battle of the Five Armies. Several people of course mentioned Balin, to which one person replied "Really? I've watched the movies several times, but I don't remember that scene".

I do find some legitimate questions and answers on there occasionally, among the nonsense. My biggest problem with it is the ephemeral nature of the form itself: things rapidly sink out of sight. For example, in response to a question about Caradhras, I mentioned the obvious parallel with Old Man Willow in Book I, "one of many parallels throughout the work". Someone asked if I would come back and elaborate, but I feel it would hardly be worth the effort, as few but the OP would likely see it by now.
